Whilst I'm asking questions, I've read about WAAS in the 2610 handbook and it appears to only be of use in the US.

Is this correct, or are there some over here as well?

Run a search for WAAS. PanEuropean has gone into this subject at some length and has deemed it pointless for automotive use.

I think you are wrong, if you enable it it will allow greater accuracy even in europe. Europe have their own version of waas.

3D gps and all that....

We ll have to wait for the great one to let us know....

WAAS is basically GPS with the benefit of base stations to enable a more accurate fix on your location. Without WAAS we get about 5 to 7 meters accuracy most of the time. With WAAS it's probably improved to 2 meters or less . If you can't find your location within 5 to 7 meters you are probably hopelessly lost anyway so WAAS won't help you anyway :D As far as I know at the moment the base stations are not set up in Europe.

.... and PanEuropean's point is that the 26x0, the SPIII and others have a piece of software that assumes that you are on the road that you are close to.

A difference in accuracy of a few meters therefore makes no difference for all practical purposes on these units.

This is so typical, I only threw this question in as an afterthought after the one about CF cards just out of interest - and no replies about the CF cards!!!!!!! (which is really what I really wanted to know :) )
