Wapping wanders 12.5 miles from Wapping to Paddington, following the Regent’s Canal from Limehouse Basin

The walk from Wapping to Limehouse, we’ve done several times.

A reminder that the London Overground (now the Windrush Line) runs under our feet:

We’ll be walking the Regent’s Canal as far as Paddington, still over 11 miles away:

The first section of the wander, will be along the same stretch of canal that we took, coming from Stoke Newington, except going in the opposite direction.

The Limehouse Basin, now home to lots of houseboats:

Clearly a local has an opinion of the BBC, very different to some here. I guess it only suggests that its reporting is balanced. Or of course, that some listeners listen more to their biases, than they do to what they see and hear:

Sometimes it feels like, someone’s watching you:

I am not sure what Micky did to put the fear into Arsenal:

At Mile End Park, there’s reminder of a time when horses pulled the barges along the towpath:

I must say the dog did look a bit ‘bear like’:

We are here now, three and a bit miles since we set off:

We are standing by the branch of to the Hertford Union Canal, dug to join the Regent Canal to the River Lea, which flows into the Thames:

Let’s carry on:

I like the history notice boards, put up by the Canal & River Trust:

The Trust were out fund raising, so I gave them a fiver. They told me that the `Trust is the third largest property owner in the country and that a pair of otters had recently been seen along this stretch of the canal:

Victoria Park, marking the boundary between Tower Hamlets (where we started) and Hackney. I’ll do a wander around the park some time:

Talking of graffiti on bridges, this, on the railway bridge about 100yds from the tall chimney near the Ragged School, should be a good advert for the longevity of the paint used. There's not many places you can still see this challenge to our legal system.

We are now in Hackney.

A bridge with a reminder that Victoria was on the throne when the canal was first dug and in use:

Sometimes, you really can think you are out in the countryside:

Spring’s here:

Then there’s a reminder you are in the middle of the nation’s capital and one of the largest cities in the world:

Let’s restart.

We’ve now walked under the Kingsland Road (A10) carving its way from the City to Kings Lynn, you can tell you are entering a trendy area, which will stretch past Angel to Camden, the old works buildings on one bank, contrasting with the new builds on the other:

Who or what Miss Hadow is, I have no idea. I can only assume she’s a school teacher:

Angel, Islington stands on a hill or rise in the land. Rather than build a long series of locks, the engineers of the canal tunnelled beneath it:

C3F11550-10F2-485C-AC69-0CC603AD9C1D-3034-00000190368E88AE.jpeg

There is no footpath through the long tunnel, so we have to leave the canal via the path up the slope to the right:

IMG_1324.jpeg

Three lads have taken up a perch on the bridge:

IMG_1326.jpegIMG_1327.jpeg

Coming out at the top, the first thing we see is that the architecture has changed, as the wealth of Angel replaces that of much of London’s East End:
