My R1200GS was delivered this morning from the dealer, with the cable in the wrong place. It's an 04 bike. The sales person who delivered it did not appear to be aware of this problem.

The cable can definitely touch the brake disc. Instructions on how to move it would be appreciated ;)

Trip, moving the cable is quite simple; you need a torx socket to remove the two bolts that are holding the caliper. You only need to remove the bolts, move the caliper just a bit to get the cable to lodge in between the two bolts. Make sure the cable isn't pinched somewhere and replace the bolts. Over at http://www.r1200gs.info/ you'll find a list of torque values for all bolts on the bike. :thumb Double check that the cable can't touch anything that's moving, brake disk etc.

Disclaimer: Don't fettle with your brakes unless you know what you're doing. Etc etc.. :eek

Take it back to your dealer and make them do it for free seems the easiest way :D

Very true - just remember that your brakes might fail on your way to the dealer!  be careful, very careful!

GRRR! :spitfire

mine has also been routed on the wrong side of the caliper.
My cable could touch the disk if I force it a little bit.
Next week the muppets at my dealer need to fix it!

My garage just seems to be endless with these kind of mistakes.
It just seems I can't rely on the knowledge of the mechanics, that's so incredibly shocking!

I have recently had the brake check. I notice in the 1st and third pictures from drdata that ther is a small black rubber hinged cover on the uright from the caliper. On one side of mine this is missing and there appears to be a small amount of brake fluid. Can anyone tell me what this cover is for ? I appologise if this is a stupid question

Looks like a dust cap for the bleed nipple :thumb

If you mean the thing that's next to the ABS cable and the brake hose... rubber cap, secured on top of the bleedin' nipple (ooerr), then, yes, that is the dust cap. If you don't have this, don't worry too much, but get it refitted by your dealer as eventually dust will creep into the bleeding nipple, and with some bad luck, the dust might end up in the caliper, potentially causing brake problems. Remote chance, but possible. You can easily pull it off and put it back on again to check it if you want. :)

Shep and Joker,
Many thanks for your prompy replies - you have set my mind at rest.

many thanks for bumping and stickying this one. Just checked the bike and its routed the wrong way. Must have come from the factory like this as front wheels not yet been off! Having new tyres next week ( from non BMW supplier, but with a technician who is second to none ) so will get it re-routed then. Once again many thanks.

GS1200 ABS- 2 WEEKS OLD!!!!

My experience tonight is similar to this- but it was on a new bike-600 miles. Here I go.
Pulled in for a fuel stop- bike was braking fine. Filled up. Paid (yep, we do) Gloved up, cold night- turned key, sort of, then turned it a bit more- dash lights up- BMW Motorrad etc, warning lights- brake failure and triangle flashing violently- off I set down the A2/M20 running the bike in, but lights still flashing. Hit brakes, bike dips, so ok-off I continue.
Now for you cynics that have just uttered P***k- please bear with me, as I had an 1150 before this and got used to the damn rear break light bulb either blowing, going high resistance and generally mucking about- I actually had BMW- SLM- change it under warrantee.
So, I thinks, this is just typical- just the same as the last Beema. Anyway, 78, 80- they said a burst up to 6k did the running in some good... and with Touratech side-lights, it’s like the parting of the Dead Sea in the fast lane. Off at J7, 70 up the slip road, hit the brakes for the roundabout-and there aren’t any..... Shoot straight across into the turn, loose some speed using the 'box and sort of come to a stop- much to the amazement of the car-drivers who are thinking 'what a c***' and so they should.

Around the r/bout- pull over. Stop engine. Check pants. Re-start engine, warning lights this time flash slowly and head off- everything seems ok.
Moral to story?
Well there’s a few- but I will heed the warning lights in future!
I think my 'gloved' attempt and starting it in the fuel station may have just sparked the CPU that should have needed re-setting. At the same time of starting, I was eagerly pushing the trip zero button. I will off course keep and eye on the bike, as its not due in till next week at SLM and Il mention it- as I don’t actually know why the brake servos failed to come on line- sorry its gone on a bit- but THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOU!!!!!!

Yep just got recall notice from BMW UK DEFECT CODE 0000345900 TO RE ROUTE FRONT ABS SENSOR CABLE, nice to know they read this website?!

My husband's GS is within those VIN numbers.
He hasn't received a recall notice yet. I think we will be mentioning it at the service next week!

Ok it is not a BM, from Saab chassis n ys3ff79f256008753 :
It has been established that a limited number of 9-3 models could have a concern where the brake servo valve may not be manufactured to specification.Certain number of 9-3 modelas to have the vacuum valve inspected and replaced.
From the US media:
Brake booster that may fail from exposure to elevated tempratures. This could result in sudden loss of power brake assist, usually with little or no warning.
8 weeks ago i rolled my 9-3 convertable outside Shiplake ,now this letter  ...Insurance paid up and now I have a new 9-3 :thumb I hope with the new type of brakes.

This may be of interest to all of you.....

I recently received a letter from my BMW dealer advising me that the manufacturer is re-calling R1200GS bikes to have the ABS wire re-routed at no cost to the owners.

I've had mine done and have noticed that the 06' models come from the factory with the ABS wire already routed this way, so it might be an idea to ask your local dealer if they'd carry out this task for you??

Hope this helps,

Red-Devil.

(Off for another San-Miguel!!)

i picked up my (new to me) 55 plate from williams in manchester, i got there early and the bike was in the workshop being checked over and I spoke to the maniac working on my bike and he told me it would be another half hour as he had some mods form bmw to complete inc re-routing abs cable.

Bob - still smiling after riding it home yesterday

[...] the cars in front are getting too close... NO BRAKES - NO F%¤&%ING BRAKES!!!
[...] The thin ABS sensor cable for the front wheel has been positioned so that it has touched the brake disk and thus the brake disk has eaten through the (ridiculously) thin plastic on the cable.
I just picked my bike up at the dealers garage after a guarantee job on the brakes. I made it home before I remembered this thread and checked the abs wiring. And guess what? They managed to route the wire by the disc - making my bike into a death trap. The incompetent, lazy idiots.

Please check this everybody. See pictures above.
