Warning - Stolen Clocks (Again)

I know this has been covered a few times but as this is clearly a big problem, thought I'd do a heads-up.

Late last year I had the clocks stolen on my GS. Busy shopping street in Covent Garden, London. Thought it bad luck. Paid the money and had them replaced. Earlier this year, bike was stolen but due to a tracker, was recovered. New front frame because of damage - paid the money.

Yesterday, both the clocks and front headlight were stolen. Again, daylight hours, parked on a busy open shopping street in Covent Garden.

There's been numerous comments about the lack of security on the fixings.

I can't comment for anyone outside London, but let's be clear - if you live in London and ride a GS - you need to be aware that your clocks/lights _WILL_ be stolen.

But, why did you leave the bike in the same place, after it already happened once?

Few points :

First, I didn't. After the first time, I moved parking space to a location directly in front of shops. The first location was still a busy spot but the second is a shopping street - with people going in and out of shops all the time. Apart from putting the bike in the shop window of Harrods, there aren't many busier places. Camden kindly put ground anchors in place and the bike was (heavy) chain secured to the ground anchor.

Second, I wrongly considered that the first time was just very bad luck - perhaps just kids messing about.

Third, I like the 1200gs. It's a great bike and as I can only run one bike it's my commute. I have to park in Covent Garden or I don't ride any more. In short, if you ever want to leave your 1200gs on a road anywhere in London - you are in trouble.

Finally, and most importantly, your question perhaps implies that I am to blame. I can't agree with this on the stolen clocks issue. I would agree if the bike hand't been secured. It was chained to a ground anchor, it had a disc lock, it has a tracker.

Point is surely, how on earth can BMW make a bike that is supposed to be able to 'ride the world' so easily prone to theft. The clocks/lights are not secure in any way at all. Right now, it is the same as leaving £1,000 in an envelope on the tank. There is a problem here and it fundamentally means that if you aren't on your bike and it's not in a garage, you can't use it (certainly in London - but probably any major world city). That can't be right.

Maybe being pinched to clone stolen right hand dipping KM/h marked bikes and then put them up for sale in the UK??

Hm. It is a risk. But a lot of us do park around London.

Point is surely, how on earth can BMW make a bike that is supposed to be able to 'ride the world' so easily prone to theft.

Wait until the theft discover that they can open the oil cap on the cylinder and piss whatever they want inside the engine.


Anyway, seriously sorry about what happened to you. Check the (long) thread about clocks protection. Seems like an easy and quick solution.

Question for anyone using the Cymarc cover. Isn't it attached by bolts/nuts which - unless you round/shear the heads off - would just be unscrewed anyway ?

From my colleagues on the continent, I also hear that there is quite an upsurge in wheels being nicked as well. Fortunately the security solution for this is a little more subtle.

No, you misunderstood, sorry for not being clearer.

My point was that the brace for less than £40 is a total no brainer - its the first thing I would buy.

If I'd had my clocks stolen once, and then the bike nicked soon after, I wouldn't let it out of my sight until Marc's goodies arrived in the post!

Despite recent misgivings about poor service the said part arrived safe and sound in 4 days, one on my clocks had started to melt - rays through the screen I guess, so I bought and fitted the dash infill and the cockpit surround to give a bit of shade - together they also screen off the access to the rear of the clocks & tidies the dash up with a 12v outlet.

Took about an hour to remove the screen, fit both bits and reassemble.

You can get them direct from TT as well.

I do occasionally have to park up in London and out of sight, I usually put an oxford cover on as well - even in summer!

Seems to me that the easiest thing is to put araldite in the heads of the bolts and the clock circlips.

I expect it's one individual doing all the stealing, catch him and the problem stops.
