Warning - Stolen Clocks (Again)

If all the parts on new bikes have been coded with Datatag, does this not make them less desirable to thieving scumbags because they're traceable?

Valuable paintings / works of art / jewellery are all very well known, photographed and documented, as are millions of serialised bank notes.... They get stolen (nearly) every day somewhere in the world. Do not think that Datatag, Smartwater or even scratching your name or postcode onto any part of your awesome steed will deter a determined (or even simple minded) thief for one moment. One 1200 owner suggested scratching ‘Stolen’ onto his clocks, in a move of breath taking genius.

Think about it another way. Bods steal entire Datatagged vehicles - more often than not very neatly recorded at the DVLA - not just the clocks.....

It might though help plod prove that the fellow wot they nick in ‘is warehouse wiv all me bits mate, might not be the honest biker he claims to be… but you never know.

So, no one buy stolen clocks from eBay. Problem solved. If you buy something stolen you are as bad as the thieves themselves imho.

So, when I sell my bits'n'bobs on Ebay or on these hallowed pages of like minded bikers..... How will YOU know if the are stolen or not?

Don't tell me, you'll see I live in Poland or Manchester and assume that they are.

Manchester .... Yep, definitely. And Stockport ....

Yes, when I change bikes and take the bits and bobs off I often sell the clocks separately. The new owner probably wouldn't want used ones anyway.

Ps Im not really from Manchester.

Yup chum, that's when you change bikes... which is probably more often than your underpants... which is when you strip off all the bling that you've added to enhance your riding experience and make a statement as to who and what you are.... Of course the poor sap wot is buyin' your gear (Akra exhaust, crud catcher, TT cradle or wotever) won't know if it's like stollen or nuffin' as he wont no you and you wont be like sellin' youse clocks in there own as you wont be sellin yer steed wiv no clocks as the bloke wot is byin it woant want a bike wiv no clox unless he is a retard lol.

Got it now?

No? OK. Fellows buy bikes and / or buy back their insurance write-off and strip them into parts to sell. The sum of their parts are greater than the whole and they make a profit. Not everyone who sells a set of clocks or a wheel or a whole bike is a thief, no matter where they live. Which brings us around in a tidy circle.... How do YOU (not me or you nextdoor neighbour) know who is honest? The simple truth is, you have no idea.

I did that to my clocks and mentioned it here, so why you taking piss of me?! They are my clocks and I could do whetever I want to do with them. I etched "STOLEN" and my reg number, so if some rightfully minded Ebay buyer sees that, will return the item to seller and ask for refund, which would affect business of this seller. I guess it is bit naive to you, but there might be some people out there who would be put off from such marked item. I know for sure - I WOULD!

OMG. After reading this thread, I thought I'd pop out to the garage to see what all the fuss was about. I managed to remove my clocks in under 3mins and I'd never even looked at the fixings or how I'd go about it before. It's ridiculously easy.

I have now ordered some Torx(pin) security screws to conduct the modification previously recommended. I'm also changing the screws that hold the wind deflector in place to Torx(pin) type. I know this wont stop the determined thief but it may at least cause some inconvenience.

did mine today.... Belt and Braces, I've popped a screw in the back, drilling into one of the stumps adding a big washer and I've glued the rubber grommet that screw passes through into the mounting bracket so it cant be pulled through, and i happen to have some stainless steel wire and crimps, so I've drilled the fat part of the stumps and wired the clocks to the mounting bracket as well, you can pull it off enough to get the bracket off, although as i have wire and crimps ill just cut it if i have to - but it's stainless wire and you will need pucker wire cutters which the average tea-leaf won't carry.

Wow, I felt like I was doing damage drilling the alloy trim bracket. Brave man to drill all those holes in the clocks. I can appreciate why people just want a bolt on solution with no drilling or mods.

When I removed my clocks yesterday, I had to remove the Perspex wind deflector to access the circlip. As previously stated, I will be replacing, the standard screws that hold the deflector in place with Torx(pin) security screws. Do you think it's worth replacing the Perspex deflector with the stainless item that Marc manufactures?

They are solid plastic stumps, very sturdy... having drilled holes for power, winglets, sat nav mount, i thought a few more wouldn't do any harm :) and the screw i have put through one of the grommets is inaccessible on the Hex without taking the screen off :thumb2

This thread is about the LC clocks.:blast

The fellow is being expansive... And likes dwilling.....

Thank goodness they haven't cottoned on to the theft of clocks or headlights in France. All that worry at the weekend, for nothing!:P

yeh i got that, but it had me worried about mine... i was amazed how easy they just pull off... BTW is there a thread about Hex clocks, and why cant we just share. :)

There could well be, but as the hex has been around since Charles and Diana got married, you can pick up second hand clocks for about £20, so they're not worth nabbing.:thumb
