To any of you that have one of these ,that sits under the tank
002-2.jpg

Have a good look
Luckily the bottle was only half full
The lid of these bottles is not fit for its purposes .
The bottle is a good idea but what they have not thought about is that the bottles will move up and down .
What I think has happened is that the bottle top is catching on the metal bracket above the space for the bottle .
To be far to the supplier they have said they would replace the lid .
But I shall not be putting this poor plastic crap back under the tank

Took me a while, but I've figured it out now:thumb

Spears.................I was thinking Red Indians:blast

why do you carry spare oil around as a matter of course?

I could understand it if you were on a long overland trip....but every day?

GS engines may be agricultural, but they don't use that much oil !

Had the same problem

Came back from a trip to Italy (where mineral oil is hard to find) and had what I thought was an oil leak down the front casing. Turned out that the lid on this bottle had split and leaked oil down the front of the engine. Piece of shite.

If you are doing 4-500 miles a day they can need topping up daily/every other day. There's not always a garage that sells the right oil, or indeed a garage to hand....

Is the oil bottle under BMW warranty, seems poorly designed?

if I was handed that bottle and asked what I thought happened I'd said somebody screwed the lid on to tight ?

Glad your getting it sorted but as Windy says why carry the spare Oil in the first place ?

If I was handed that bottle, I would say that the idiots who made it made the moulding for the top too short.

Whats the right oil?

No, it has one of those rachet collars at the bottom of the lid which breaks when it's first unscrewed. My one was only tightened down to the rachet part of the bottle and definately not overtight.

Just had a look at mine which was fitted only 1500 miles ago and the cap is starting to show signs of wear and the retaining strap is looking pretty perished at the front end so its coming off until I can bodge a repair to both problems.

In the meantime I will just have to put this in the "quite good idea but insufficient development" category.

Exactly the same thing happened to me on a trip around Spain this year. Unfortunately the bottle had been stored in my top-box and I didn't notice the split. Half a bottle of oil leaked into my topbox.
Not happy

Sure....but just use any old engine oil to top it up....oil level doesn't need to be at the max....just about all petrol stations sell oil...and even if its 1 in 3 petrol stations that sell oil you'll stilll be fine. Chillax. Don't panic.

So I still don't get why carry it !

Hi All, Stupid question time, so have a go if you feel the need.
Are there only certain year GSA's that have this space under the tank to store a bottle?
I have an 06 GSA, I've had a shufty under my tank area and I can't see any sign of this space.
:augie

Fill your bike up with whatever you please.
Personally I fill mine only with what is recommend.
I don't panic about it, and I am very relaxed. I simply carry it with me.
Get over it.

Because not all of us ride in the SE where a petrol station is on every corner. I regularly ride for whole GSA tanks at a time without passing one. I can carry oil without causing myself hassle, so why not? What is the issue? :nenau

Oil container

Previous correspondant had it correct.
Why do you wish to carry an auxiliary oil container with you?

BMW provide an adequate container with the bike. It's called a sump.

It holds enough oil for any journey in between oil changes.
I normally change oil before a trip, and usually cover around 4000 miles on such an expedition.
I never, ever, look at the sight glass whilst on such a trip. In fact, I only look when the oil change takes place. Drain oil into a pan, & there is usually circa 4 litres in it. Good enough for me.

Sump holds ofer 4.5 litres. It will be good enough down to around half a litre, though I wouldn't like to try it.
I do not check the oil n=in my cars either in between services. It is pointless.
