Warped Discs?

Just bought a 2002 1150 GSA ABS 22k on the clock, when i apply the front brakes i get a "pumping feel" through the lever that leads me to believe that the front discs are warped? its more noticable at low speeds with gentle braking, does the panel agree that this is indeed the problem? if it is how much am i looking at for a set of new discs? pads i have seen for about £35 on eblag?

take it to an mot shop an put it on the rolling road, or strap summat to the fork and against the disc and measure the run out, 2mm max, might only be 1 disc
buy bmw , carbone lorrain pads, ebay ones are usually FREN there fekin crap, ebc are ok too

How odd! My 2002 GS started doing that the other day too. I've put it down to warped disks too.

I'm getting mine from Motobins. £65 per disk - Grimeca ones.

Mine's been doing that for the last 5 years. I can't feel a pumping through the lever but there is a slight grab/release feeling in the slow speed, gentle braking. It hasn't got any worse and doesn't seem to affect braking performance or pad wear (3rd set of pads in 36,000 miles) so I am ignoring it.

I can feel a slight pulsing through the brake lever and the bike surges a bit too. It's not an ABS type pulsing. The pulsing I feel increases with speed.

2 x Grimeca disks
4 x Ferodo pads

£203.50 including VAT & P&P

Not bad considering the OEM disks are £136 + VAT. EACH

Good on yer fella, mine has been doing the same since last year, I can live with it as I only use the rear from 10 mph to a stop, but it's nice to hear that you've had it for 5 years without any further problems.

Thanks guys for all the replies, I might just ignore it for now. If it does get worse I will take a ride down to St. Eptoe and get a new pair of discs fitted.

my 98 1100gs is the same on the front,but im getting used to it.
would be interesting to see just how many other people have the same problem

There was a thread over on ADV GSpot where they reckoned it was more an area of different frictional characteristics rather than warpage or variations in thickness, some guys cured the pulsing with an aggressive cleaning/light sanding, next time im over there I will look for the link,

Took my '02 1150 abs (26k mls.) for its mot yesterday,it passed but got this advisory-Front roller brake test indicates slight fluctuation of brake effort.Can't feel anything through the lever so we'll see what happens next year.

I had the same advisory when I got my 1150r MOT'd last year. I have never noticed this on the road, not even under heavy braking in the Pyrenees 2 up with full luggage.

The bike is due an MOT next week, so we will see what happens on the rollers.

I wonder if this is just something that the tester puts on the certificate to show that he is doing his job, and that not every bike gets a straight pass?

Mine is similar - grab/release when braking gently to a halt, no real symptom at higher speed or harder braking. 2003, 32,000 mile 1150GS w/ servo ABS. Had the dealer check the disks during a service and the mechanic said not warped, just a bit of wear. I wonder about cleaning the disks, but it doesn't bother me enough to get round to it. Another suggestion I've heard (a friend had this sort out a similar problem on a Honda Firestorm) is to torque up the mounting bolts for the disks.

I might be tempted to do something about it if Steptoe could post the full works to NZ for 180 quid, but it seems to be more an aesthetic than a safety issue.

My 1150 non servo non ABS got the same advisory during last year's MOT despite not feeling anything via the lever - but hey what do I know?

MOT time came around again last week and I completely forgot the advisory notice so was mentally totalling up the costs of replacement discs/pads whilst it was going through the test. End of test guy gave me the Green Pass form with the discs mentioned again. Mind you it was a different MOT station

Took my R1150r (servo, abs) in for MOT today and it passed with no mention of fluctuating brake effort. I did get an advisory for my back tyre being near the legal limit, getting a new one fitted tomorrow by garage that did MOT.
