Wasserhead achilles heel

Fuck me JB, you are really putting the cats amongst the pigeons here .

I shall ask tomorrow......................:D

All I know is that BMW are very funny about water cooling in the past and don't fit overly large rads to their previous water cooled GS's, in hot weather the fan on the XChallenge runs full time, that's why Timpo had a larger core rad made and fitted.................an achille's heel

I would check with BMW, before I fitted them to a WC GS

I was offroading at the time guys. BMW says its bad luck and not covered under warranty.

It's a wear and tear item. Not bike's fault. Well it's a design flaw leaving them exposed. An enduro should have some protection in this area. I will go to the top with this as I believe we will see more and more if this.

This wasn't self inflicted. This was another vehicle inflicted au believe.

Stay tuned

As for all you tossers with your negative 'waiting for the right opportunity' to point out the LC failures you can get lost. No one gives a s h i t what you think

Clearly if I had something to hide I would not have posted it on an open forum.

Bike performed flawlessly in all terrain and conditions. Handled great onroad and offroading. Plenty of power on tap, very comfortable in over 800km days.

Any water cooled bike has the same issue which is why we have businesses that do rad guards.

The fact that BMW omitted to include some sort of factory protection is beyond me but that's another subject all together

Getting a rock in the exact water duct must have been a 1 in a million. I am sure I am not the first or the last. Maybe the first reported one.

Maybe I ride the bike little harder than most and don't keep it clean as Latte boys which is why I am the first

Those of you that do own the LC have no doubts it's a very worthy succession to the legacy GS bikes

Ride safe boys and girls

Is it because the vast majoirty of GSs never go off road

Well said - there are far too many winging, whining Sheilas on this site at times :D

Interesting.
I wonder if others here are aware they are invalidating their warranty by taking it off road :nenau

or have I misread that?

Define road? Does the WC have to be restricted to metalled roads or can gravel or dirt roads be ridden?

Does GS no longer mean gelande strasse? Does it now only only the appearance of an adventure bike? Is it in fact now only a fashion statement like shoes that "aren't designed to be walked in madam" as a lady friend of mine was once told.

The Op is talking about a hole in the radiator caused by flying debris not being covered under warranty:rob

Ask the Australian chap in this thread..it's what BMW told him about his holed radiator unless I read it wrong :nenau

How are they going to cope at the BMW Off road school in Wales, as their new fleet are the new LC (according to Bike mag).
I guess the support trucks are going to be quite busy?

At the very least the lack of rad gurads IMO is an oversight by BMW or put another way a selling opportunity or potential profit centre :D

Something along the lines of a plastic louvered cover over the radiators like manufacturers fit to dedicated off road bikes like KTM's etc

You can buy mesh sheets from B&Q very reasonably. A couple of cable ties and :D:thumby:

I reckon the odds of holing a radiator are very very small - why does everyone think that it is inevitable and that the new LC is therefore unsuitable for off-road use.

I reckon that there are plenty of other ways of disabling a GS when riding off-road (like smashing the drive shaft on a rock) to worry too much about the radiator.

The simple answer is that BMW stuffed up by not putting radiator guards. They could have at least put plastic ones. The radiators sit high up and it is an accident waiting to happen with most. Doesn't matter where you ride a hit by a rock or something similar may cause damage. I am sure the new Adventure model will have some sort of protection. I think the comments made about warranty is bollocks. BMW just released the base model without any protection so you can dig in your pockets and add accessories. CYMARC has made good radiator guards with customised airflow openings check it out.
