we are off

Fantastic Lee. Going to have to go back and start this thread again. Such good photos and yes, just enough words and great route details. 👏

Woke up to another belting day and for some reason i was not feeling like doing much, the big gal wanted to take another look at the Grimsel, Furka And Susten as the last time we did them there was not a lot to see as it was 0 degree and very claggy, and to be honest i really didn't want to but it is as much her holiday as mine so we saddled up and off we went, on the understanding that when we returned i could just have a doss about the camp and she agreed. Pics below most were taken by the big gal while moving as it was a very busy and all i wanted to do was to get back to camp, i know most of you are thinking what a wimp grow a set but i know from old that when i feel like i was that day i am not at my best on bike.

A choice was made and we headed for the Vosges none motorway and none peage a journey time of 5 hours give or take, heading for one of our favourite spots, camping Kayserberg.

Again the weather gods are being kind to us and the following day we take a walk up to the ruined castle atop of the hill just above Kayserberg and we followed the path over to Riquewhir a delightful walk if at times a bit of a scramble, but the views over the town and vineyards are superb.

Today we will again go and visit Fort Mutzig, i say again as on 3 previous occasions the place has either been shut or we miss the tour time by a few minutes, this time we were determined to get it done, so a trip to the tourist information office to find out times and when an English tour guide would be there, guess what no English speaking guide that week (sore throat no doubt), sod it we would go anyway, there is very little to see above ground but below there is plenty to see, any info about the place you can find here https://www.visit.alsace/en/218008888-fort-of-mutzig-feste-kaiser-wilhelm-ii/.

Today would see us visiting the Eco museum Alsace, it is a bit like a visit to the black country museum or blist hill in Iron bridge but a very French version of them, there is plenty to see and well worth a visit if that's your thing, we happen to like that sort of thing others may not. this would be our penultimate day in the Vosges with our last day being a ride around the route de cretes and a visit to the Linge Memorial Museum, info for both museums in link below.

Our trip is nearing its end we will be making Verdun our final destination before the push to home, its a place we have been to before, but we never fail to find something else to see, the place had so much going on in WW1 its difficult to imagine what it must have been like back then.
All we had to do was have our breakfast pack up camp and make our way to Verdun a journey of around 4 hours avoiding peage and the bigger roads, so no rush today we would be stopping for lunch along the way.
It never ceases to amaze me the things you come across just bimbling through France

We had 2 nights in Verdun and did not camp due to the fact we would be wanting an early start to get to home a journey of roughly 500 mile, this is about my max distance when i have the big gal on the back and we very rarely do that mileage it is normally around 250 mile or less, but when the need arises we will.
So a day around the Verdun area and try to find somewhere we have not been, first stop Ouvrage la ferte it would be about an hours run due North of Verdun and then onto the Memorial to

PC du lieutenant- colonel Driant he his buried very close to the site of a radio bunker and trench system.., a little about both the man and fort below

So i guess that is it, a good time was had, very little rain and mostly hot to hot sometimes (for me).

My best bits apart from some of the riding would be going up the Schiltorn, Corsica, Mont Brun les bains,

The big gals best bits Saint Veran, Corsica, Fort Mutzig, all of Switzerland, Eco museum.

All in all there really was not a bad bit (other than dropping the bike, it didnt spoil anything) we did lots of walking lots of sightseeing plenty of miles, met some great people.
if you have managed to get to the end of what might seem like my version of War and Peace, i only hope it has given you a few ideas of where you might want to see or venture to. remember this is just a snapshot of some of the places we stayed, and very little of the things in between and lets face it that is a good part of the trip.

The End
