Wear 'n' Tear or Warranty Claim?

1200 gs corrosion

Hi,i also have the dreaded white spots on every unit of my lc gs,i bought it last year with 150 miles on 9 months old i reported it to the dealer at 600 miles and was told let it develop its never used in the winter and is spottless!! On getting it out this week it has a few more spots developing contacted dealer and he is opening a case on it? He says i might not get anything done because its not to bad i would agree with him on that but for £12,000 it shouldnt have any corrosion my question is were do i stand with this ?? my dealer is very helpfull and i get on well with them,at the end of the day its not their decision.

2014 GS LC & I'm starting to think Bmw paint isn't anywhere near as good as their previous reputation..
I'm pretty anal about looking after my bikes & use ACF50 & WD40 where appropriate.
I had issues at less than a year old with rear wheel spoke nipples which was replaced under warranty, (the front still as good as the day it left the factory)
I have a couple of minor issues with specks on other parts of engine/drive train, but tried warranty just before it was out of warranty, to no avail but I'm not concerned enough to chase it..

I was considering an ex demo bike but after 3 months & 2000 miles there's no way I would purchase inbuilt corrosion as the dealers don't look after them from new the same as us lot do..

BUT, watch out Bmw, your getting a name for yourself..

Honda are not a European brand.....:blast

Obviously. But they seem to be having their share of issues at the moment.

Regardless of country or continent of manufacture, it would seem that EVERY brand of bike has its issues.

Had a call from Allan Jefferies today and BMW have authorised a replacement engine and drive shaft :thumby:

I have to agree they all have problems i think everything now is built to a price and the quality is forgot about mainly because we all keep buying them and not complaining enough, maybe we should start voting with our wallets??. If i get nowhere with my lc gs i am thinking of jumping ship and going the japanese route ,versys 1000,s10 yamaha, because of the amount of gss around the residuals now are about the same, watch this space.

I know mines an RT not a GS, but I got a call from the dealer today to say my RT claims have been authorised, so that means

New Engine
New Final Drive
New Centre stand
New Rear Wheel
New Clocks (Already replaced once)
New Riders seat (Heat has packed in)

Bikes already had
New bar ends (paint peeled off in under 250 miles)
New right side bodywork (warped panels)
New Clocks

I'm chuffed it's getting sorted but can't help thinking that with the bill for all that, why don't they just replace the bike? (Of course building them properly in the first place is the answer)

Blimey! Triggers broom springs to mind!:D

I picked the bike up this morning and the new engine seems very smooth and refined - not as revvy as old one. The gear change is also smoother in the first three gears without a loud clunk when engaging first. It still goes nicely....well up to 5000rpm until it's covered 300 miles :thumby:

Since BMW moved to the black engines and final drives has anyone had any issues with the paint ??

My local dealers claim there's been no issues with the black paint, but they wouldn't order my replacement engine and final drive in black :tears

Having said that, the silver paint on my new engine looks different to the old one. It's thicker and has a slightly orange peel/Hammerite like texture

Yes, just had final drive changed on my black 14 GSA TE... No probs with dealer but it's a pity when you consider the cost. The list at present is:

Foot peg - corroded (looked like made from old tin cans!).
Final drive - corroded at hinge point.
Centre stand - corroded but repaired it myself.
Clocks - misting up, waiting for Germany to send new screen cover.

Still love the bike, for what it does, how it puts a smile on my face and compliments my riding...

Andy

My bike is less than three years old and has began to rust badly. Its only this year I've noticed it. The bike has been treated with ACF50 every year so that hasn't saved me. I'm taking it in to the dealer this week for them to photo. They have set my expectations low as the bike is no longer under warrently and the extended warrently apparently does not cover this so I will be at the mercy of BMW.

BMW Corrosion Issues on Bikes,Cars don't escape either........

I have been reading the unfortunate issues you guys are having with Corrosion /Quality issues on bikes.
It's so very sad, a great bike without doubt, but you shouldn't have to put up with these annoying basics on a premium product.
The cars are no better really, and over a period of 18 months my 62 reg 320D Msport saloon had no less than 16 new wheels replaced due to corrosion.
The wheels where diamond cut 19" alloys,I was told that you wouldn't have a problem with corrosion if they where fully painted, but because customers demanded diamond cut finish (these are basically polished and lacquered) then corrosion would always be an issue!!!!!
The simple thing was the laquer was either missing,or very thin around the BMW logo hub cap,and once water gets under the laquer then pitting and corrosion occurs.

OK,if they wanted to keep replacing them that's fine by me,but as time went on it became a bit embarrassing.
Anyway finally got rid of the 320D,and replaced it with an X3 with 20" diamond cut alloys. Guess what, yep they are starting to corrode around the hub.

If it's under a layer of crud...............:blast

It has been under a layer of crud. The recommendation I got was just to hose down the bike in the winter following ACF50 treatment, to avoid washing it off. It was not noticable last year or I could have done something about it under warrenty.

If that recommendation was wrong its been an expensive mistake.
