Wear 'n' Tear or Warranty Claim?

I have been reading the unfortunate issues you guys are having with Corrosion /Quality issues on bikes.
It's so very sad, a great bike without doubt, but you shouldn't have to put up with these annoying basics on a premium product.
The cars are no better really, and over a period of 18 months my 62 reg 320D Msport saloon had no less than 16 new wheels replaced due to corrosion.
The wheels where diamond cut 19" alloys,I was told that you wouldn't have a problem with corrosion if they where fully painted, but because customers demanded diamond cut finish (these are basically polished and lacquered) then corrosion would always be an issue!!!!!
The simple thing was the laquer was either missing,or very thin around the BMW logo hub cap,and once water gets under the laquer then pitting and corrosion occurs.

OK,if they wanted to keep replacing them that's fine by me,but as time went on it became a bit embarrassing.
Anyway finally got rid of the 320D,and replaced it with an X3 with 20" diamond cut alloys. Guess what, yep they are starting to corrode around the hub.

I'd have thought after that you'd avoid diamond cut alloys?:nenau

They were an option on the X5 when I ordered it, but I've gone for 20" black alloys. Let's see how they get on when the car arrives in September.:thumb

Not my choice Mr Nutty GSER to have 20" diamond cuts, car was 6 months old when I got it.:nenau

Thats why i have a Merc :D

What do reckon BM do with all these engines and drive trans they change?? Slap some more paint on em and use them as replacements??:aidan

It has been under a layer of crud. The recommendation I got was just to hose down the bike in the winter following ACF50 treatment, to avoid washing it off. It was not noticable last year or I could have done something about it under warrenty.

If that recommendation was wrong its been an expensive mistake.

Did you wash off the ACF after the winter? Surely you would have noticed it at that point..

My 3 year old GS LC TE is having engine changed next month due to paint issues, as photographs of others above show(exact same probs). Paid for 3rd year warranty but paint not covered!
Not really wanting to buy another one now.
I thought my Mutley 1200 S Touring had issues but this takes the pee a bit.

Do you think Ducati would change your engine after 3 years for paint defects ? I think not.

I was looking for a nice secondhand Multistrada and they all had worse corrosion than my GS LS engine had

Ive looked at a few second hand Multis in dealers, and every single one had corrosion. Seems to be the norm.:nenau

Surly a 10 month old bike should be able to cope with one winter especially from the like and rep of BMW these bikes are build solid this is why we all buy them
And rode them we trust the name and the bike.

I would certainly go back to the dealer this should not happen within 10 months.

I have a 6 month old BMW gsa been all through the winter washed it a few time not much and I live and ride directly on a grit route and the bike has nothing on it went through it throughly last weekend gave it a good wash all underneath and in to the nooks and cranks no sign or corrosion.

Warranty claim. Kick up a fuss mate.

Re my post #111. I now have a brand new engine as the paint was blistering/cracking badly on my 15286 mile 2 owner from new GS TE. Very happy that BMW sorted it but annoyed that it needed doing in the first place. Was told that the silver finish on my new engine is of better quality!! Time will tell on that one.
When mine was in being pulled apart i took the latest version of mine out. First thing I did was put the heated grips on. YES, THEY ARE A LOT HOTTER. Same gloves, same air temp. Was told that a part had been changed!

Correct re engine swap on my old Mutley. But a great deal was replaced under warranty on the Mutley. These are not cheap bikes but the finish is appalling.

My bike has this corrosion problem. Its due to go in for a replacement engine this week. However my dealer told me I have to pay 50% of the labour charges (approx £210) as the bike is out of warranty. Anyone else had to pay this?

What about the new 600 mile service?

I think I am correct in saying my bike has a lighter flywheel as its an early bike. Will the new engine be the same or the heavier one?

Finally will having a new engine affect resale values?

TIA

I had to pay for some of the labour when my K1200S had its clutch pack changed outside warranty. £210 doesn't seem too bad for a new engine when they could have refused the claim completely, although I do wonder if it's the dealer, not BMW, wanting to make a quick buck.....

The new engine in mine isn't quite as revvy/responsive as the old one, but it's more refined and has a better gearbox. The paint finish is much better too. The 600 mile oil change was free of charge at Allan Jefferies.

I would hope the new engine has increased the value as it's done 13k miles less than the old one.
