i have some play between the rear wheel and the drive on my g/s mono, wheel nuts are torqued correctly, anybody had this and know the solution? slightly worried it might let go:eek:

Could be the bearing starting to let go. There's an inner and outer bearing. Best check it out if the inner fails it can spin on the housing.

interesting one this. my rt has a very slight bit of playwhen the rear wheel is waggled side to side. It is very slight but when I went to check with Haines it only states that it is a dealer job. Would be interested to see what the opinion is at the weekend.

There are shims in there somewhere, as the bearing are taper rollers.

Measuring the preload / fit, whatever is probably a job for a professional, but simply adding or changing a few shims to reduce the play to as close to zero as possible shouldnt hurt.

There was a thread on this over on ADV Riders Old School, but I cant seem to get much on their search engine --------.

Was this the one?:

You and Rob Farmer contributed.

A good way to get round rubbish search engines on forums is to use a google 'site search'. Enter a search query like this in google:

Code:
site:www.advrider.com rear wheel shimming

This searches the google index of advrider for the search terms (in this case "rear wheel shimming") rather than relying on the forum's own search tools. This is how I found the link above.

cheers
Matt

stuart, thanks, i think you have found it! only problem now is there seem to be 18 different shims:blast. i have no way of measuring which i would need so i wonder if motorworks or the like would do a sale or return on these.
the wheel nuts were well over-tightend at some point in the bikes past , when the hub was blasted prior to re-building the wheel, cracks were seen , starting from the stud holes  the hub was replaced with new.
thanks for all your replies so far:thumb2 . steve
