Hi guys, well having decided to get into the offroading on the gs alot more i have started to try and trim some weight off the old girl.

1) - Remus titanium can and y peice - not sure what this saved exactly compared to stock as i did the conversion before i was interested in weight saving. if anyone knows please let me know (Done)

2) have removed lots of farkle rubbish and will continue to reduce the wiring etc in the stuff that i have kept (Half Done)

3) indicators - a simple one this! by removing the standards and putting on some decent quality (not chinese rubbish) led ones i have reduced the weight by 500g! on indicators!!!! They also solve the problem of them rubbing on the pannier mounting frame and are brighter than the originals. spot on. (pics to follow this evening) (Done)

4) going to convert one of my touratech foglights into hid and ditch the l/h side one

5) are the magnesium rocker covers actually any lighter than the standard ally ones? anyone got a spare ally and mag one they could weigh for me?

6) get a lightweight set of 21" front & 18" rear made up with excel / Talon rims

7) convert the rear master cylinder to a motocross type - will only loose a few grams but itll look cool ;)

Thats all the simple stuff i have / want to do so far. After these it starts to become a little more expensive.

Goal - loose 30 kg... without buying a 1200.
And im gonna loose 30kg as well :)

trying to get me to loose 30kg by pushing the sodding lump everywhere?!

Wonder what the weight difference is between Remus titanium can and Y piece, and standard cat and stubby? Doing the latter made the biggest weight difference to my bike (and stopped all the unwelcome popping on the overrun I was getting with the Y piece).

Out of interest, where did you get the indicators from?

Indicators are "oxford" ones.. the new type of led ones they have brought out. £37 a set (which made me wince) but they look great. Just like the ones bmw fit to their new bikes as an option. (£125 i think?)

They do some smaller ones as well that would be lighter but i wanted to have indicators that still do just that.

Add some weight.

I know your trying to get the weight down, but don't forget to add an extra steering stop of some kind, or you may be sheading weight off your frame when you drop it. :thumb

already got that on mate ;)

Price is a bit salty for what it is that. Though it is tt so 100% profit margin needs to be taken into account.:augie

I did it the cheap way and made my own. I just shaped some nylon blocks with the old dremel, and zip tied them to the forks. It works but dosn't look as good as the TT one.

a cunning plan.

anyone brought that one from ebay yet which looks to be made by the manufacturer of tt bits but is half the price? £46?!

take the beak off.. dunno if thats possible on the 1150. but if you can - then do. its a completely pointless piece of plastic.

I think you will be doing well to shed 30kg (you and the bike :comfort) ...... I'm going the other way... I'm sure I've added more than 30kg in lights and touratwat bits :D

lol. i put 30kg on since working on site. So im starting serious training for to go the other way. Training involves training to not eat so many bacon butties...

heres those led indicators

Thought about taking the ABS off?

It's a fair dod of weight, carried high up; also, not ideal off-road!

There was a guy on Adv Riders who did it on an 1100 as part of a major project that included fitting 'normal' forks. IIRC correctly, he said the ABS and associated gubbins weighed 25lbs. So there is 10kg or so off your target.

Clearly, there are major implications for safety, so it would need an informed approach!

Weight savings....
theoretical but these are big pieces...
What if you replaced the metal gas tank with a plastic aftermarket piece?
What if the battery could be replaced esp. for summer, with a 1/2 size one?
Single-piece custom seat, maybe a trim single seater?

Frankly, agree that the best (and cheapest) bet is to lose weight...but this is also the most difficult!

what abs? mine doesnt have it :D

ive already converted mine to the adventure seat & rack and that had a significant weight saving. The standard gs seats weigh a ton! & the adventure conversion removed the toolbox, a load of bracketry etc etc

mergh... i dont really fancy being stuck offroad with a flat battery if i flooded the engine and had to crank it over for a bit etc etc. Though i would be interested in weighing an oddysey and a standard battery and comparing them. Being a dry cell the oddysey might be a bit lighter.

Thats another big one, i fancy some ktm adventure r version, front forks with the 21" wheel. Or pherhaps some hp2 forks but they are rare as rocking horse poop.

As I understand Odyssey batteries aren't 'dry' they are AGM cells with the electrolyte in suspension? I'd imagine they also have just as much lead in them as any other battery of a similar performance...

Chain drive conversion - that's what you need ;)

oh.. ok my mistake... i thought they were a dry cell for some reason. I could do a lithium ion conversion. I have loads of large packs of cells lying around. But im not sure how many amps the starter motor sucks when its turning over. They could shed a few kg! Though i would need to also wire in a balancer... maybe not then!

Lol chain drive... now you mention it:rolleyes:

You'd also need a custom charging system for LiIon. I'd also be surprised if a compact LiIon pack could cope with starter current.

Junk the Motronic, fit carbs and electronic ignition, change to standard forks, fit a small plastic tank, build an alloy subframe, get lightweight rims, remove all unnecessary plastics, fit an enduro light pack ....

.... or just buy a 250 enduro bike :thumb

already got a tricked up crm250 for that ;)

i just like scaring the bejesus out of my mate on the gs! :D

And its so i can enter some more serious enduros on it next year. Its gonna be little odds n ends i think that add up to the weight saving rather than MAJOR jobs... (forks n wheels aside)

Anyone had any ti' wheel bolts made up? Theres a good 100-150g saving to be made there!...

scratch that.. i just found some! :D :D :D!

and lifetime warranty against corrosion :)

Is it one of these you wanted??
