A friends R1100GS of 1997 vintage has developed a weird ignition problem.
Problems first started with the bike cutting out for no reason, it would start soon after. Then one night returning from work it cut out with a mechanial clatter, worried that something had given way in the engine he started to investigate, engine is fine but, its since been discovered that the left hand spark plug will spark constantly, and I mean ALL THE TIME ! Not just when it should spark but as in machine gun fire sparks !!!
It also apears that the left hand injector is also injecting at the same time, (audible clicking noise can be heard from the injector)
Firstly suspected the ECU, but now wondering if its a pick up problem, as in the pick ups telling the ECU to constantly fire/inject the left hand cylinder.
Checked the wiring on the HALLS all is fine no corrosion or broken insulation.
He's not been able to determine if both plugs are machine gunning at the same time (which I belive the GS should do) as its erratic as in sometimes it doesnt spark at all. I've suggested he lays both plugs side by side to check it out.
Anyone any ideas ?
