Yet Another Engine

The oil light issue continued and has ended up as........

I have another short engine on the way :blast
(It was guaranteed for 6 months, :thumb2 thank god for good dealers)

After oil sensor change, new oil filter, O-ring and shim we got a pressure gauge made up at Pirtek, which fits into the bike where the oil pressure sensor is located. The actual gauge was mounted on the instrument panel, just to make my life easier. This was the final proof to see if there is something wrong.

Take of point - the oil sensor point

Normal pressure @ 80°C should be 5.0 bar @ 4000rpm

When I started off on a little jolly the pressure was fine :bounce1 the bike had already been running for about 10 minutes before we left and all was OK. Good pressure.

But after a while the pressure dropped to 2.0 bar @ 4000rpm :nenau not good

Bad News – Yet another engine removal and fitting session :blast
Good News – Got bike lifts now :clap

Quick check for healthy oil pressure?

The bad news is ..No!! Not from the outside anyway. The good news is yes, sort of. I am told that the oil light should go off immediately, should not flicker at low revs. The pressure switch is set at a very low 7psi Im told so if it is on at all there is not enough pressure to lubricate the engine. ... I suppose it would be possible to screw an oil pressure gauge into the place where the switch fits, that would give you some indication of what pressure you have.
Im sure others on here will have better info though:rob

Is there a 'quick and easy' method of determining the health of the lubrication system without installing an oil pressure gauge (as per Lilith's effort)?

For example, if I set the engine running at, say, 1500 rpm for ~ 5 seconds, then kill the engine (via the kill switch, not the ignition key) the oil pressure light should come on after a period of time.

If the light comes on quickly (say 1-2 seconds), there is presumably not much back pressure, and hence possible problems looming.

On the other hand, if the light doesn't come on at all, the pressure sensor or light are probably stuffed!

Is there a typical period of delay between killing engine and the oil light coming on that indicates a healthy oil pump/filter/O ring/gasket?

A quick test yesterday on a (coolish) 93 PD with fresh oil and new filter was around 12 to 15 seconds (not measured, and no elephants counted).

Does any body else have any typical figures?

To be honest 48 quid from Pirtek all made up, It took 10 mins to fit and rout the oil pressure gauge and pipe its worth the ag, and then you've always got a gauge and pipe, but could only need the adaptor for another to fit it another car/bike.
When we pick another airhead up this is coming with us, because Lilith's sounded so sweet :mmmm

IT'S ALIVE

:oonyack

Well here is the latest News - 25 miles and all is well..........so far :thumb

After a heavy work schedule and alot of training courses and not forgetting the waiting for lightweight pistons, gudgeon pins and barrels by Siebenrock courtesy of Boxer Supplies. The bike is now running.

I just have the task of running it in :roll

Currently been running between 2500 – 3000 rpm at a very gently bimble and as usual the British weather this week looks superb for running in…..rain….rain …and more rain………:bounce1

Good to hear the bike is mobile under its own steam again. Bet you keep on glancing at the oil pressure gauge? Will you be brave enough to take it off?

John you are so correct.........it goes something like this

Speedo...........pressure.......rev counter...........Speedo...........pressure.......rev counter...........Speedo...........pressure.......rev counter...........:eek::eek::eek:

opps forgot

road ......Speedo...........pressure.......rev counter...........road.......Speedo...........pressure.......rev counter...........
