Sportsbikes are great fun and if you want one that will do everything (one tarmac) look at an early Honda fireblade
CBR900 rrs/rrt they are the last of the carburated blades quite old now but totally brilliant
Easy to ride fast smoother than a smooth thing smothered in smooth stuff and with no offence intended somone of your stature will find it very comfy
2k will get you a good one and it has honda build quality to boot .
I have had two and have a lot of mates that have had them and always say it was the best bike they ever owned .
Agreed. Always fancied one. Bullet proof build quality and great fun, but it's the wife's turn for a new bike, and she's waiting for her new 650 Gs to be delivered. She's keeping her 05 blade. Done over 20,000 miles from new, mostly touring. You get to realise how far off the pace a Gs can be when chasing her.

Having been a member of this site for a couple of years I have found myself from time to time jumping to the defence of sportsbike riders when reading some of the rubbish written by a minority of people who probably either judge all sportsbike riders by the antics of some of the muppets they see on a Sunday morning, or they haven't got the balls to get on one themselves and see what it's all about.
I am now back on a sportsbike because quite frankly I found the GS a bit too tall and heavy for me. No doubt about it, a fantastic bike and I enjoyed it. But now I'm happy to be back on a sportsbike and planning my 11th tour on a gixer, gps included. For the misguided, I know it's a myth that you can't tour on a sportsbike, you just need to pack carefully and take only the essentials.
Just as an aside, riding in a 50mph limit this morning, got passed by a guy on an RT, weaving in and out of traffic, way over the limit, his choice of course, but it just goes to show, it's the rider not the bike. All bikes are great as far as I'm concerned.

All too true, but there is one point that I feel must be made. I've seen far, far more complete and utter numpties* on sportsbikes than on every other type of bike put togeather...... the sad fact is that they're cheap and give the weekend warrior an adrenaline rush on a budget. Unfortunately, with the popularity of the big trailie at a 20-odd year high, there's more and more numpties appearing on my favourite roads.
* No, I'm not a riding God, but neither am I convinced that doing 2000 miles a year in perfect conditions qualfies me to ride on open roads as if I'm Rutter at the TT

I might go try some out at a dealer and see what they are like. P&H down at Gatwick have a good stock of 2nd hand and demonstrators ... as well as a nice Dainese shop

Excellent's a bit generous. Having done the touring thing on a 98 Blade and a 04 Gsxr1000, at best I'd say the Blade was barely acceptable and the Gsxr less so. Then again I did have a pillion which would make some difference to your viewpoint. Brilliant bikes, yes. Excellent tourers, no. My 2p
