At last a balanced knowledgable opinion on this subject..

Some background,, i'm new to this site and to the "GS" world in general. This is my first post on the board.. I've recently bought an '06 GSA1150se from a person who is both a very good friend, and a member of this site,,as is his Son. His Daughter is also a fan and owner of a GS. I presently also own and enjoy a Suzuki Hyabusa, as does rgsman, coincidenty I'm also a Manxman. Prior to this I owned a Kawasaki ZZR1100 for seven years.
To blame these bikes for loss of licences ,points, death ,destruction and all things short of castration is far short of the mark.. If you dont wind the right hand back it wont do anything . The responsibilty rests with the nut on the end of the bars,lol.. Agreed both of the above machines will do over the legal limit in first gear - but only if you tell it to. They and many like them are more than capable of "bimbling" around and can be very docile.. I have toured a fair bit on both of these and never had any of the problems. In fact we all went to Brno CZ together with GSA's GS Dakar,Blades, GSXR1000's etc, a group of around 8 bikes. Everyone managed to get there and back without any of the above problems. In fact the only casualty< gsxr1000> occurred at less than walikng speed inside a camp site courtesy of a very drunk German guy. Granted the larger bikes are a bit of a handful in confined spaces ,,but so is the GSA . IMHO if you ride your GS in a sensible manner then youll ride a sports bike in much the same way..
In the meantime I'm thoroughly enjoying my GSA, love it to bits.. Slowly getting the hang of it . Yes its very different beast , but a beast neverthe less, lol. Different ,,at least that,lol.. Cant wait to get going , struggling right now ,being one of the "short arse" brigade.. How cruel nature can be,lol..
Liking the site very much too. lots of good info and nice folks . Very helpful to a newbie like myself, and i look forwards to many hours in here, and getting going on the social side /trips/meets etc.
My only points came from driving a HGV class 1. hmmmmm.

welcome, you can tour on any bike, in fact the bikes you mentioned are mostly sports tourers, not focused sports bikes, I am also of the short aresd club. :thumb

Sportsbikes are great fun and if you want one that will do everything (one tarmac) look at an early Honda fireblade

CBR900 rrs/rrt they are the last of the carburated blades quite old now but totally brilliant :thumb2

Easy to ride fast smoother than a smooth thing smothered in smooth stuff and with no offence intended somone of your stature will find it very comfy :thumb2

2k will get you a good one and it has honda build quality to boot .

I have had two and have a lot of mates that have had them and always say it was the best bike they ever owned .

Agreed. Always fancied one. Bullet proof build quality and great fun, but it's the wife's turn for a new bike, and she's waiting for her new 650 Gs to be delivered. She's keeping her 05 blade. Done over 20,000 miles from new, mostly touring. You get to realise how far off the pace a Gs can be when chasing her.

Novice, you will never know until you ride one, so if you want to have a go on my gixer come on over, you know where I live as you bought the bag from me. By the way, I spotted you from a distance drooling over the sportsbikes at the show :augie

The offer is a genuine one btw.

Having been a member of this site for a couple of years I have found myself from time to time jumping to the defence of sportsbike riders when reading some of the rubbish written by a minority of people who probably either judge all sportsbike riders by the antics of some of the muppets they see on a Sunday morning, or they haven't got the balls to get on one themselves and see what it's all about.

I am now back on a sportsbike because quite frankly I found the GS a bit too tall and heavy for me. No doubt about it, a fantastic bike and I enjoyed it. But now I'm happy to be back on a sportsbike and planning my 11th tour on a gixer, gps included. For the misguided, I know it's a myth that you can't tour on a sportsbike, you just need to pack carefully and take only the essentials.

Just as an aside, riding in a 50mph limit this morning, got passed by a guy on an RT, weaving in and out of traffic, way over the limit, his choice of course, but it just goes to show, it's the rider not the bike. All bikes are great as far as I'm concerned.

All too true, but there is one point that I feel must be made. I've seen far, far more complete and utter numpties* on sportsbikes than on every other type of bike put togeather...... the sad fact is that they're cheap and give the weekend warrior an adrenaline rush on a budget. Unfortunately, with the popularity of the big trailie at a 20-odd year high, there's more and more numpties appearing on my favourite roads.

* No, I'm not a riding God, but neither am I convinced that doing 2000 miles a year in perfect conditions qualfies me to ride on open roads as if I'm Rutter at the TT

'there's more and more numpties appearing on my favourite roads'.

Guess you've got to get used to the fact that they're not your roads then, and that everyone is entitled to use them, including aforementioned numpties.

Ah, is that where I'm going wrong? Must remember that. So what you're saying is that I'm not allowed to like anything unless I own it? Got it now :thumb

Do we also include the "numptie's" that ride scooters and drive hot hatches in these bizare statements.

The argument about sport bikes does not quite hold up.

Sport bikes are not cheap at £9k plus (not including the smaller toys which new are still not cheap)

Most riders that buy these bikes new are not kids on the bones of there ass. They are usually 30 plus and in most cases responsible riders who pick there places to open them up in relative safety to others.

Certainly the majority of GS owners myself included are old gits who can't be bothered with riding the snot out of there bikes anymore.

However young kids that only have a few quid to there name buy the older cheap second hand sport bikes and cos they have the need for speed and an ego to match coupled with no real sense of mortality ride like twats. This behavior however is not limited to sport bikes, they drive there cars or scooters in the same reckless manor but most do grow out of it.

Part of the reason they dont go for the likes of the GS is 1. we are too tight to get rid of them so there are not so many second hand 2. to date there are more combined sport bikes sold compared to the likes of a GS 3. A high proportion of GS owners are at least middle aged and don't want to die just yet.

Thanks for the offer :thumb2

Although I think I will be too worried going out on someone else's pride and joy. Especially a fast bike like yours.

I might go try some out at a dealer and see what they are like. P&H down at Gatwick have a good stock of 2nd hand and demonstrators ... as well as a nice Dainese shop :o

There are some sport bikes that really do have a full on riding position and yes they will not be so comfortable but the likes of say a Blackbird, Hayabusa , ZX1400, ZX9R, Triumph ST even the GSXR1000 all make excellent tourers

Excellent's a bit generous. Having done the touring thing on a 98 Blade and a 04 Gsxr1000, at best I'd say the Blade was barely acceptable and the Gsxr less so. Then again I did have a pillion which would make some difference to your viewpoint. Brilliant bikes, yes. Excellent tourers, no. My 2p :)
