What does 'Character' mean?

As in 'He's quite a character !'

There aren't really many things that really annoy me. But, when someone describes a bike as having 'Character' that really does. It's a lump of metal it cannot have character.
It's a bit like having 2 bikes in the shed and saying that you're worried you might hurt the feeling of one of them if you take the other out more.
