The lads in Naran BMW did a great job fixing up SamGamgee 2 and tomorrow morning i'll set off again in a northerly direction. I've no idea what i'm going to do really, I'll make my mind up on the way; part of me wants to go out and camp for a couple of days on the planes and make sure i dont go back to Ireland saying.... I wish I'd stayed longer in Mongolia.....the other half of me says the bike is creaking...focus on getting to Magadan...head north. I'll make up my mind, at a minimum I'll spend at least one more night camping in Mongolia and try and soak it up.

Ulaanbaatar is an up and coming city, lots of nice hotels, lots of business going on and mining seems to be igniting the countries economy. Theres quite a few foreigners knocking around, mostly tour groups pit stopping on the way to China.

Ulaanbaatar is not a particularly good city to hang about in. When you go to tourist office the police advice bears it out, walking around at night time is a serious no no. Most tourists arrive at the airport and the road takes you down Chingis Khan's avenue into the various hotels in the center, and the main square is pretty nice.

Having come in myself on the truck I saw all the outlying areas, and they are in wretched condition. The first thing you notice on the way into the city is columns of black smoke, open sewers, rubbish tips; its got a long way to go.

Its rife with pick pockets, I've a pair of cargo pants and keep my wallet in a 3 button pocket which was tried twice, even when i left the wallet in the hotel my pockets were getting done as I was walking around the town.

So sooner than get into a big story about the city and the things I saw....let me just say this; if you find yourself out this direction, UB is a city to stay a night or two in if you need to rest up, or get stuff done. At the risk of repeating myself Mongolia's beauty isn't in its town and cities; its in its wide open planes and mountains; and in the people living in that harsh landscape.

This is the last post for a few days... Ulan Ude should be the next one, after that they'll be rare as I inch closer to Magadan. (The very name gives me the colly wobbles)

Over and out...thanks for all the messages of support! :-)
The big fella.

Wow Oisin. This is one heck of a RR, I'm glued to this thread. I'm awestruck by your journey. Stay safe out there and keep the reports coming back. Loving it.

I'm reminded of the old proverb 'be careful what you wish for, you might get it.

You went in search of adventure and boy are you ever getting it. What an utterly amazing trip you're having. It's the kindness of those who have so little that has always amazed me when I've travelled and your experiences are certainly tallying with mine.

Best of luck with the next stage of your trip, we'll all be reading along and wishing you a smoother (!) ride from here on.

Just a quick update......
I left Ulaanbaatar this morning and headed north for the border with Russia. The weather was magic all day, and not a bit of gravel to be seen....just a lovely long straight line of tarmac... seeing as the last time I rode the bike I was being shaken to bits.....I had to get off the bike a few times to make sure everything was ok....it just didn't feel a 100%....

This part of Mongolia is green, and its one of the only locations in the country where they can actually grow crops....the whole countryside is a mixture of rolling hills and green planes as far as the eye can see.

I was thinking about camping or going out and about in Mongolia but I had the chat with myself and decided that my Mongolian adventure was over, lets face it I'd seen enough and had more than enough memories, so I said i'd cross the border with Russia and shoot up for Ulan Ude. All told a journey of about 550km.

A couple of things went against me almost right away. The first was you lose an hour as you cross the border so instead of getting to Ulan Ude by 8, it would be 9, not a big deal but its always better to arrive early into a city you don't know when your looking for accomodation.

Then I hit something on the ground, and the front tire deflated, I'd a poxy puncture. I felt that because I hit something and it went down almost right away....ok I've shredded the tire....

I pulled in, hit the hazards and started pulling apart my gear to get the puncture repair stuff and the compressor.... I didn't want to look at the tire and see a shread........

No matter what I did though I could'nt find the hole, it was getting dark, I was bollixed so I said ok, can I push this bastard to a hotel? While this was happening this woman kept trying to sell me a mammoth tooth...I told her...look darling I'm trying to fix my bike....so instead of pissing off she just kept dropping the price, while the first sprinkles of rain started to fall.

I asked her do you know where there is a hotel? She said 20 minutes walk dead ahead.... well 20 minutes isn't as bad as 40 so I started pushing the fully laden Sam Gamgee up the road with a flat front tire. There were plenty of young fellas all giving it giggles so I was using the phrase "Go lick the back of my left one" fairly often.

About an hour of pushing the bike later, I came across a puncture repair place.... oh you beauty!...... went in and the guy pumped it up to a big psi, soaked it with water to see if we could find anything..... nada!....the bollix has stayed up since then.

The guy reckoned I hit something hard, it dislodged the tire, the air went out, but as it was being pumped back up the tire reseated and is now fine......

Anyway....whoever has the voodoo doll of me on a bike...please stop sticking pins in it!

over and out from Russia

Well done mate... Good progress and a faster border crossing than anticipated...

Weather looks as though it has been ok for last few days and weather forecast looks good...

Hope it stays that way - run to Skovorodino should be ok as it is mostly asphalt and then to Yakutsk is regarded as good condition dirt at present...

Got all this from an update received from Bolot today (a contact of mine in Yakutsk).

Safe ride...

Simon

Route I'll be taking over the next few weeks...

From Ulan Ude, I head to Chita (Go'wan, open google maps and have a look!)
a distance of about 660km..... 1 day.... (Will be straight forward I think)

From there I head to Tynda which will be a two day ride assuming no problems, but as soon as the road turns north, road conditions will be dominated by the weather.

From Tynda to Yakutsk ...again a two day ride

And from Yakutsk to Magadan, somewhere between 4 and 7 days.....purely dependent on weather.

:-)

I've no idea. That disappeared on Saturday... I have read the Blogger terms of business - can't imagine it was all the swearing that got it removed !!

he normally communicates with me via Gmail and Skype. For example i knew about the shock and was on the case sorting it out 7 days before heis blog caught up.

If I hear anything i'll post here even if he hasn't updated the thread...

I know he was going to ride hard from Ulan-Ude through Chita to Skovorodino and I managed to get a weather forecast and road condition report to him late last week.

He wasn't going to stop long in Chita, so I'm not surprised I haven't heard as I doubt he will find more Internet until Tynda or Yakutsk and he still won't be there yet...

But I will share what I hear...

I have a contact in Yakutsk who is looking out for him...

He is brutally honest in his posts... I wonder if this may have rubbed anyone up the wrong way?

Maybe the movie deal has been struck and all stuff is down, I think Shrek is to play Oisin and donkey to play the GS.:D

and for the export market.....
