The lads in Naran BMW did a great job fixing up SamGamgee 2 and tomorrow morning i'll set off again in a northerly direction. I've no idea what i'm going to do really, I'll make my mind up on the way; part of me wants to go out and camp for a couple of days on the planes and make sure i dont go back to Ireland saying.... I wish I'd stayed longer in Mongolia.....the other half of me says the bike is creaking...focus on getting to Magadan...head north. I'll make up my mind, at a minimum I'll spend at least one more night camping in Mongolia and try and soak it up.
Ulaanbaatar is an up and coming city, lots of nice hotels, lots of business going on and mining seems to be igniting the countries economy. Theres quite a few foreigners knocking around, mostly tour groups pit stopping on the way to China.
Ulaanbaatar is not a particularly good city to hang about in. When you go to tourist office the police advice bears it out, walking around at night time is a serious no no. Most tourists arrive at the airport and the road takes you down Chingis Khan's avenue into the various hotels in the center, and the main square is pretty nice.
Having come in myself on the truck I saw all the outlying areas, and they are in wretched condition. The first thing you notice on the way into the city is columns of black smoke, open sewers, rubbish tips; its got a long way to go.
Its rife with pick pockets, I've a pair of cargo pants and keep my wallet in a 3 button pocket which was tried twice, even when i left the wallet in the hotel my pockets were getting done as I was walking around the town.
So sooner than get into a big story about the city and the things I saw....let me just say this; if you find yourself out this direction, UB is a city to stay a night or two in if you need to rest up, or get stuff done. At the risk of repeating myself Mongolia's beauty isn't in its town and cities; its in its wide open planes and mountains; and in the people living in that harsh landscape.
This is the last post for a few days... Ulan Ude should be the next one, after that they'll be rare as I inch closer to Magadan. (The very name gives me the colly wobbles)
Over and out...thanks for all the messages of support!

The big fella.
