Would like to have an idea of what happens to diff when fails ie lost drive or noise / oil leak ? .Only ask as i have just got my new 05 gs & its my first BM
As a mechanic i am interested in the details of any faults

The symptom of a rear drive fault seems to usually be excessive play in the rear wheel. Well, by excessive, I guess I mean any play - my bike has no play at all, vertically or horizontally, in the rear wheel.

The problem shows as play in the rear wheel, like bearing wear. However, the play in my wheel, varied between approxamately 1.5mm at the rim, which, is obviously very noticeable and zero when checked after further mileage. I presumed there was movement within the assembly that caused this variance?
When it was exhibiting zero play, there was absoloutely nothing to suggest there was a problem.
If it hadn't been mentioned on the forum, I'd have probably not checked it.
There were no quibbles from BMW and the complete unit was changed by Clarks, who gave a first class service.
