What Harley should I take for a test ride?

Take 2.
I've had another e-mither from HD.
This time I've opted to take something called a Heritage Softail Classic for a test ride.
I am struggling to dismiss the ludicrous idea of the Secret Service bike I saw in Nottingham though.

Probably the best bike they do.

If you lose all the bling, change the 'saddle bags' for something slightly less camp, fit lower bars and change the badge on the front fender to Softail DeLuxe

...if you happen to be called Grayson Perry.

Or change your name obviously :roll eyes: ;)

I've had an e-mail from HD UK offering me the chance to "Win your dream ride anywhere in the World" if I book a test ride through an e-mail link they sent me.

I know nothing about these bikes at all but quite like the look of them these days & will probably take them up on their offer with a view to a potential purchase.

I don't want one for touring on or green-laning as I already have both of those options covered with the bikes I own.
I just fancy something that will allow me to plod around the country lanes in comfort, with my wife as pillion, & won't be too heavy or costly to run.

As we have no local dealer anymore I can't pop in & have a look prior to booking the test ride so I'm wondering what the sensible option would be for me to book. I've never even sat on a Harley before, let alone ridden one, but I do like the t-shirts.

Despite the rather coarse nature of some of the people in this section I respect the knowledge & experience many of you have of the bikes & would be grateful for any sensible suggestions please, though I do expect the usual amount of pish taking as well.

Thank you in advance Comrades.

On another thread I've got a 24 hour Harley experience (present from wife)
With my mate we have got a softtail breakthrough and a glide the one with no top box and small pillion seat
Pick them up from Guilford Monday lunch and take them back Tuesday
I'll let you know what they are like as I'm a NON Harley rider but I may be turning to the dark side !
Ive got a Suzuki 550e just restoring it as its been in a shed for 20 years
Triumph T120 1968 Bonneville
R1200gs triple black
Cheers

I had the test ride competition email as well, so took out a Road Glide Special earlier this week.

http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_GB/Motorcycles/road-glide-special.html

The bike had a real sense of occassion, although I wasnt very confident on it as it had just been PDI'd so brakes and tyres not bedded in (10 miles on the clock).

Really didnt gel with it, wind roar was horrendous, couldnt hussle it on the road as the suspension seemed really rudimentary and crude. The seating position put all the weight on my lower back and I felt myself slouching as I rode it.

The BEST thing about it was the radio, loved that ! Mind you couldnt hear it over 30mph however loud I turned it up.

Maybe in another 10 years I'll forget this experience and try one again, but really glad I tried it. I guess its not my vibe at the momentent.

RBW.
