What is the best helmet to get ????

I'm also considering shelling out on a new lid ('scuse the pun) and have thought about both the BMW System 6 and the Schuberth C3. I think I've read something on here that the C3 will fit in the Vario top box whereas the System 6 won't .... can anyone confirm? Or is it size dependent?
I'm normally a 57cm in a Shoei in whichever model but when I tried a System 6 at the dealer I needed a 58-59! Either they're very different sizing or they break-in substantially.

I have the Neotec from shoei, very good helmet, light, great vision, easy to use one handed with the flip design.
I never had a shoei shaped head until now the fit seems to have changed,or alternatively my head has changed!!!
I had a system six, same thing had to go up in size, but after a few rides its bedded in and became lose around the forehead and started to slip.
Ref ear plugs i have spent hundreds on custom ones from varies places, however for me after a couple of hours on the bike they ache like hell,i have gone back to the standard yellow ones, they suffice.
Both helmets i use aria and shoei i use ear plugs, and both fit in a decent top box.

Like you I was sick of the foam earplugs. I have very small ear holes and it was a struggle to fit them. I looked at custom made plugs, very expensive.
I then came across DIY ear putty. You mix two types of resin putty and fill your ear, when its set it makes a flexible plug which is a comfy fit and works 100%. They do not project and catch on the helmet lining etc.
I 100% recomend them and wish they were available before I started with Tinitis. I suffer 20 hours out of 24 with this problem, dont ride without them.
The putty kits are about £13.00 of ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MYO-mould...=UK_BOI_ProtectiveGear_RL&hash=item4d024cc551

The helmet choice is then up to you.

I've always used foam plugs and been quite happpy, but I'm interested in a 'proper' solution.
I find the idea of squirting putty into my ears somewhat unappealing and possiblity even unsafe. Am I worrying needelessly?

I did the mix putty type earplugs, easy and certainly not a dangerous procedure.

They re convenient and comfy at first but after a couple of hours you do get earache. Perhaps that's just me.

I mix and match between those and the standard foam plugs.

What I would add is that the vast majority of people put earplugs in badly. There's an easy way of doing it even if you have very narrow ear canals....

Twist and roll the plug, fully compress it.

Use right hand over the top of your head and take hold of the top of your left ear and pull it UP vertically. Use left had to insert plug, it will drop in really easily. Don't let go of the top of the ear until its in. The PULL straightens the canal and opens it up.

Try it, there will be a big difference.

At 13 quid, I think I'll give it a go.

Best helmet

I have just bought a HJC R-PHA MAX flip up helmet with built in sun visor from Hein Gericke at the closing down sale for a bargain £279.00 Its my first flip up.

The quality is excellent, the visor complete with Pinlock fits and operates really well, very well made. even has a real metal catch. It has one top vent that works well as the bike screen would deflect the wind away from any chin vents ,

The flip down sun visor is great, and I find in warm weather at lower speeds I ride with the sun visor and chin bar down and the main visor up, Its cooler and suprisingly very quiet,

The top vent makes some noise over 70mph on my GS1200 when open but is noticably quieter when closed.

The flip up chin bar works well but to date have not used it, I guess I have not got used to the fact it is there.

No fogin issues but its hardly the right time of year to coment on that.

Its light as well and has removable linings for cleaning, The HJC have come a long way with the quality of this helmet so might be worth a look as a few years ago I would not have considered them

Had a BMW system 4 for many years and intended to upgrade to a system 6 earlier this year but just didn't feel comfortable when trying it on. Ended up with a Schuberth C3 and really happy with it. You do need to try on for size though, I would rate both these helmets as 5*, its just that the Schuberth fitted me better.

Did you get the answer you needed?
Did you make your mind up?
Did you buy a helmet?

Will this now be THE reference thread for future helmet buyers?

BTW my Arai fits comfortably and I do use fitted ear plugs :)

IN a word :

Did you get the answer you needed? ( not yet , fairly good opinions out there up to now. ) :thumb
Did you make your mind up? ( no yet ) :nenau
Did you buy a helmet? ( not yet )

Will this now be THE reference thread for future helmet buyers? ( if you like ... why do you have better one ... ?)

What th f*** does Carpe demi mean ?:confused::confused::eek:

This is like asking 'what bike should I buy'? but even more so where helmets are concerned. There are hundreds of different makes and models in a range of sizes and as I used to say to my students (when I was an instructor) there is nothing more important than fit. Unfortunately where noise is concerned, only riding will tell and dealers will not allow a quick spin up the bypass (ooer missus). It's taken 30 years of riding experience to get my current set up right (R1200GS fitted with Adventure screen and system 6 helmet). You have a better chance of winning the National Lottery than getting the right lid.

I wish you luck!!:aidan

I am totally puzzled by people that wear ear plugs, I spent 25 years in the mining industry which is as noisy as you could get and have never and would never ear earplugs on a bike...............you can't hear what's going on with them..............my hearing is still fine...............perhaps I am lucky............oh and a Schuberth C2 which I like very much!

You are lucky. I worked in a power station and took part in an extended hearing survey that convinced me if I had not worn ear plugs I would have suffered hearing damage, many power station workers did suffer and the HSE does not set noise exposure limits for no good reason.

Hello, I got a Schuberth S2 when they came out this year, buying without reviews and to my relief found it amazing.

I ride a naked bike so aerodynamics is the first thing I looked for. The helmet is great when looking back and general riding at speed as it cuts through the air great and is extremely quiet.
Lovely wide visor and has built in fighter pilot style sunglasses which is great!

There is a bluetooth conversion out for it too but its expensive at £279.

The helmet was around £450 though:(

i have seen a few reviews on here regarding helmets .. I bought a carbon fibre bell helmet about a year ago and it seems really noisy..

i am after a new helmet now ,because i am sick of wearing ear plugs...:( i was thinking of a series 6 BMW helmet or one of the range .. anyone had one of these...whats your opinion ?

or what is the most quietest one out there ?

thanks in advance :thumb:thumb

I have the series 6 very nice lid but I still wear ear plugs. I have tinnitus and I do not want it getting any worse! Any helmet without plugs is too loud unless you are sitting in a car!

I can't think of any medical reason for a person in a high-noise occupation - not to suffer hearing loss. Unless your exposure was limited.

I'd be wearing plugs if only - to prevent coal dust from entering the ear.

Al :)
