What is the best helmet to get ????

How long is a piece of string?
A helmet that is quiet for one person may well be noisy for another
Shape of head, position on bike, length of arms, body, legs, seating position, screen ... all play their part.

Go try some, choose one that fits snugly with a colour you like .... and buy it :thumb

Good fit is more important than price ....

:beerjug:

I'd like to suggest that a good pair of well fitting earplugs are equally as important as a well fitting helmet and indeed they are complimentary to a well fitted helmet. :blagblah

Now if only ...........

Techno - take a run down to Rotherham and get your sen a pair of custom earlugs...made to measure while you wait.

P.M. micky for details.... he knows a man

Lifespan

... of the helmet that is! Maybe discussed elsewhere but lids need replacing after about 5 years irrespective of how they look as the component materials degrade over time.

A big +1 for proper fit. And don't under-estimate the benefit of a lighter weight helmet. The lighter the weight the less tiring over a longer ride. The less tired you are, hopefully the safer you will be.

Totally agree :thumb

Had a perfectly servicable Schuberth C2 but bought a C3 which was almost half a pound (remember lbs & ounces) lighter. Never wore the C2 again :nenau

:beerjug:

Ps ... thanks for the 'plug Norm :thumb

found the one

well i went to the BMF and looked all over for the C2 and C3 to try them on. Could find any that were my size. But i tried a Shoei Neotec and it fit like a glove... really liked it . Also tried the shark open front helmet as well , and was impressed with the cheaper unit.
Think i am going to buy a neo - tec and Visit " and see Micky " for some moulded ear plugs at some point.

Thanks to all who contributed so far :thumb

regards

Tony

I have a Shuberth C2 and very happy with it. Only complaint is the screen on my bike makes the C2 chin vent very noisy when "closed" so its taped over but allows air when I click it open.

If I stand on the pegs the helmet is almost silent (with ear pugs anyway). So poor screen design clearly has a big effect on helmet noise.

Shark Evoline 2 for me.

If you buy a open face helmet, some of them are not effective when they are open and are only supposed to be used closed. The visor is often an integral part of the helmet when closed.

The Shark Evoline 2 is good open or closed.

Use it wearing glasses and with a Cardo rider. It's good.

The best helmet. One that fits, better a £100 one that fits correctly than a £500 one that doesn't. Read somewhere that in 12% of fatal bike accidents the helmet has come away from the riders head.

Depends on the accident as well... I'm sure Simoncelli had a correctly fitted helmet.

Just don't even consider a Schuberth J1 ...... I quite like mine but you would absolutely hate it.

A word on moulded ear plugs. I had an unsuccessful and costly job done by a typical audiologist hearing aid supplier. They will all make moulded ear plugs but quite possibly they wont work.

I spent £80** and they were no better than riding without any earplugs. I had a second pair made at their cost but the difference was minimal. These were made thicker but all they did was hurt my ears when fitting the helmet.

I currently use Mouldex soft plugs (sold in the the little plastic button cases). They work so well I am virtually deaf when they are in. I believe they are so good because they go deep into the ear and expand. The custom moulded plugs were superficial and could never fit tight enough to stop noise getting through.

** I could have spent up to £200 but the fitting method was the same and (I was sold anyway) doesn't go very deep into the ear canal.

I also tried custom made moulded plugs, purchased at the bike show last year. Couldn't get on with them.:blast Gone back to the 3M orange foam thingys which do the job well, and are cheap and disposable.:thumb

Having read all through this I am still unsure of the perfect lid for me :blast

TBH I find the ramblings of many can help, first thing I want is a good fit and opinions on that are useless, but how people find the noise levels, comfort, quaility etc. is useful.

Gonna be scouring the bike show, and as it is hard to find anyone with a bad word to say about the C3's assuming some good deals are available that is my target.

My HJC R-Pha Max is a very nice, extremely light flip front lid, noise levels are OK and general quality seems excellent, and the sun visor drops all the way down (a failing that bugs me on many lids) it also comes with removable linings and a detachable breath guide thingy. Just a pity it does not have pockets for my Autocom speakers - the only real failing I can find.

I intend to keep it and rip out the speakers as I can't find a spot where they work well and are comfy, that gives me a very good lid for shorter solo blats, and whatever else I get will be my touring lid.

The Nolan N90 looks really good for the money, so will be the fallback plan if no decent deals on the Schuberth.

As for safety, I have read several articles over the years that all state the same, a helmet stops your head wearing out as you slide down the road, or your skull getting dented by sharp protrusions - they all do that.

Surviving a spill is far more down to luck than the cost of your lid, and a well fitting £49 special will outperform an ill fitting £500 lid if it falls of your head.

Spending the £450 you save on some training will almost certainly be a better bet from a survival perspective :D

I have a Schuberth C2 which suits me really well. But a mate with a similar size head cant wear it for more than a few minutes before he gets a headache. He loves his Shoei but I'm not impressed though its not painful to use.

It looks like C2s (and probably C3s) are great if your head shape suits the hat but if in the slightest doubt walk away. It could be a very costly mistake if your head doesnt suit the hat.

Buy an Arai and use some earplugs. I had a schuberth and it was quiet but the pinlock wasn't as good as the Arai system and the whole helmet generally felt a bit cheapo. The Arai maybe a bit noisier but it feels nice, doesn't steam up and, by all accounts is safer.

I thought the Schuberth lids were meant to be one of the best?
