What is this building?

Tooling around Scotland on Sunday during my attempt at the Iron Butt Saddlesore 1000 (1000 miles in under 24 hours) I saw these strange buildings built into a hill near Tongue (on the left of the island next to the jetty. Anyone any ideas what the are?

Scotland looked mighty purty on Sunday in all that sunshine.

Well there is a downside; saddlesore indeed, I was on the bike for 20 hours. Mind you, wall to wall sunshine for the whole run (until it got dark anyhow) was a real bonus. There wil be a report with more photos on advrider.com very soon.

Yup, Lime kilns at Loch Eriboll.

The loch was used as a deep water anchorage in WW1 and 2. There's some stones up on the hillside arranged to form the names of some of the warships that anchored there. I've never found them, but 'Hood' is one of them and i believe the local schoolkids go up once a year to repaint the ships names in white paint.

You were very lucky with the weather, I was at that very point yesterday afternoon at two o clock and you couldn't see sodall because of low cloud and drizzle.

Just to show anyone who's unfamiliar with biking in the Highlands how the weather can change so quickly in this area, this photie was taken later on the same day that ThreeDawg took his photie.


This is the abandoned old A838 between Kyle of Tongue and Loch Eriboll. It doesn't show up on maps, but about 1 1/2 miles of it is still rideable.

aye it was, but this was specifically a number of U boats that ended up there at the end of the war. I'll have to google to see if I can find it.

Hey, there's vast swathes of A roads in Sutherland the same width as that. The modern A838 is still the same width all the way around Loch Eriboll on the main photies, and most of the section between Durness and all the way down to Ullapool is the same.

Plus the A roads to Lairg, Altnaharra etc, etc, etc.....

In slightly better condition, mind. (just)

Get yer arse up to GOTC this year, I'll be doing a run round this area on the Saturday. Virtually no traffic, no speed cameras and sections that should really be classed as a racetrack.

You're right that you're wrong

Th U boats made their way to Eriboll at the end of WW2.

The German Fleet scuttled at Scapa at the end of WW1 under the orders of Admiral Ludwig von Reuter rather than put his ships under the RN's command.

The ancient Scapa Flow joke is Admiral Reuters last message to his fleet at Scapa Flow:

"I said subtle retreat - not scuttle the Fleet!"
