I've also got one as well I have no idea what it is for either maybe it is a pillion strap

It was standard on the earlier models.

In one of those less-is-more moments I started to remove the one fitted to my bike. Then the alloy rack assemly started to go all wobbly and I snugged it all down again. Not that it weighs all that much...

Yep, I replaced the original plastic tool cover on my W plate R850GS (bought new) with a supa dupa Touratech locable metal one, that came with said strap. Never used it though. Used to get a lot of questions about what the strap was for.......

I had a V reg and a W reg 1150 and neither of those had a strap on?
Speaking of the top box, it's not possible to repair the lock on mine. I paid a locksmith a tenner to tell me it's rubbish. Anyone ever fitted a padlock?

Not possible because part is broken? Rekeyed a few standard locks before with little issue, just bought a new cylinder and the blades to match? Or is the mech broken?
The mech seems broken. I'll take a photo tomorrow.
It's one of these boxes. The lock is located just to the left of the handle and is supposed to stop the handle from being raised. Is it possible to buy a new lock mech? Seeing as the lock is just screwed to the box from the inside, I was thinking I could attach a padlock there instead. Anyone any tips? I don't like the box to be honest but it's there and I'd rather spend my meagre funds on fuel!

How is it broken? I have the same box, it's easy to "lock" but still have the handle free to open. Usually a few tries is enough to get it right. I hardly use the thing, the panniers are better by far.
