and this as well...
As a customer of Naims who were owned by V21 who were owned by Biscit and had internal disputes and have now gone into administration and been bought by Breathe and I don't know who the feck I'm paying and not even sure how much I'm paying now, can anyone recommend a good Broadband supplier? I was paying about £12.99 a month but honestly I don't know whats going on now. I want cheap, no-hassle service. I don't download films etc so probably won't need a huge allowance.
Why isn't anything ever easy?
Maybe I should pop into the rant section.

How I sympathise with you I was unfortunate enough to have been stuck with V21/Biscit and I was offline for more than a month whilst trying to get the marker removed from my telephone line so I could go with another isp, I eventually went with Tiscali. Now pay £18 a month 8mb connection (7.5 ish if your kucky) and all telephone calls to geographical numbers free up to an hour in duration.

Have a look at Virgin's offerings - if you are in a cable area then they have a deal for £10 a month for 12 months.

If you have to use a phone line then they have packages from £14.99 (plus your BT line rental on top).

Like Dickie's Tiscali, you get the best deal if you sign over your phone billing to Virgin.

I've been a Virgin non-cable customer for 18 months. I signed up because, at that time, they did not insist on a 12 month contract. The broadband service is fine, bills and direct debits have been fine. No idea what customer service is like as I have not needed to contact them: I will be very happy if this arrangement continues. I make very few landline calls so I have not signed up for the phone billing: I've got a generous call allowance on my mobile contract.

Yes Iwas with with V21 too, what a mess, I went with BT and very happy with them too. john:)

Following advice read on these forums, I was with TalkTalk, who are amongst the WORST people I have ever had to deal with.
I've now moved over to Zen, who get great reviews in the press. They're based in the UK (Rochdale I think), and if you do have to 'phone them over any matter, then you get to speak to a real person, who talks to you as an individual, not as an irritating nuisance.
I don't think they are the cheapest, but I do think you get what you pay for.
So I'd give Zen top marks.

Probably unfashionable, but I have been with BT for the last three years since we moved away from 'cabled areas' . I pay about £15 a month for a basic service (and out here in the country that means 1/2mb line) which serves four PCs in the house via a BT wireles router.

Only problem I've ever had was when a neighbour cut down a tree and took the telephone line with it. Bt were out next day and fixed it back up, no probs. Neighbour was p****d when he got the bill - especially when he was told that they would have disconnected/reconnected the line free of charge if he had asked first!

As I say, no problems in 3 years. Unlike some of the folks round here who have 'great' deals wnith other ISPs but who are regularly having plroblems - usually blamed on BT!

If by chance you have an Orange mobile on contract (£30+ per month) you can get broadband for free (limited download bandwidth) or for £5 per month you get unlimited broadband AND free UK and international landline calls AND free calls to orange mobiles.. 24/7!

Oh, and a free wireless modem/router too.

I was a plusnet customer for years and when they were bought out by BT I decided to try this offering out... so far it's been faultless, i get great download speed and the free calls thing is superb.

I've had no problems and can totally recommend it.

I think if you're not an orange customer, you still get the option to have the above service, but it costs (and i'm not 100% on this) around £19.99 monthly.

-hope this helps somebody.

Comparing ISP's

This is a very subjective topic...as bad as GS's ! Also varies from place to place, even street by street !!

There are some good resources to check out if you still have access to the web or at work.
Get hold of a webuser mag at WHS or Borders and also see the web site of www.webuser.co.uk . Also, do a google search on " comparing ISP's" and you'll see tons listed. Some sites are dedicated to comparing all the offers available.

Just some ideas available and ,my 2p worth

I'm just about to switch my business ISP from Pipex (with them since 1997 but completely down the pan now) to Zen, based on recommendation and a bit of web searching. I'll let you know how I get on :thumb
