What (KTM) Panniers

Strongly considering an 1190 Adventure.

Have 3 options for cases:

1. SW Motech

I can re-use my current top box and get 2 new panniers, worried they will stick out a lot, but the plus side is they are large and the total cost to do this would be about £600.

Anyone running this setup?


2. KTM Plastic

Look cheap and tacky and do not have the capacity I would prefer, going from 82L down to 73L is quite a drop. The plus side is they are very compact, weigh in at about £1k if bought with bike.

With the bike being a few years old how are people finding these? I will only be using them on tarmac.


3. KTM "Trekker"

I think these are made by Touratech, but not certain, the sizes are about right and I do like top loading (stuffable) boxes.

Concerns are width, not so much for filtering as I will not be commuting with them, but I am more concerned they will deck out, also the frames look ugly and I do not think there is a quick release option.

The KTM "Configurator" does not give an image from behind so it is hard to see how wide / ugly they may be.

Anyone got these? or any pictures? - and do they deck out?

Well, having read through 68 pages on Adv Rider I could see there are many more, but in effect it is far easier for me to get the KTM dealer to sort it all out, or go for the cheaper option of using some of what I already have (I Pannier and 1 top box)

There is also an issue with timing as I may be about to buy a new bike just before I go on a trip so I would need the kit on the bike in about 3 weeks time.

If there is something that tucks in neatly, looks good, gives great ground clearance, has 35L+ on the smallest pannier and 40L+on the largest pannier, is simple to fit and can be turned around in two weeks from date of order at about £1,000 for all 3 boxes with all fittings / locks etc. I would be interested.

I just thought someone out there is most likely to be running or have seen the official KTM metal box offerings - my dealer only has boxes on a shelf and no bikes with luggage fitted to look at, the internet has not brought me up any pictures of the KTM metal stuff either.

The Holans do look quite good, but from what you say probably likely to fray my nerves with such a tight deadline, shame as they looks far better than KTM offerings with the exhaust cut-out on the metal pannier, a 28L 7 45L would be perfect, they look fairly high up and unlikely to deck out also.

I think capacity is more important to me than looks, but not if the damn things are going to dig in and have me off on the first Alpine hairpin.
 
I have holan nomadas, 2 x 38l with a wings short exhaust. If you put a wings short exhaust on the bike, you can have matching panniers on the bike. It did take a couple of months for them to arrive but worth it.

Have a word with Cliff over at the Adventure Bike shop near Long Melford.
I've got the Bumot 46 41 combination, along with the built in toolbox on my 1290 SA.

FYI the trekker cases are GIVI, although you can get the Touratwat cases, but they don't have the cut out.

FWIW I hate alu. boxes and frames so went with the KTM bread bins. Waterproof, look ok(ish) and clip on and off with no ugly frames when I'm not using them (which is 95% of the time).

If they hadn't come with the bike I'd have gone the soft luggage route, or, minimal frames such as Cookie's Andy Strapz panniers.

I've got the KTM bread bins and really don't like them. The bike gets a bit unstable if you start giving it some abuse (I know you shouldn't but....) and the right hand one is next to useless because of the cut out for the exhaust.

I've got a set of Wolfman soft panniers that I use if I'm camping where it's not necessary to carry the panniers into a hotel because they need a lot of small straps to get them to sit properly and clear the exhaust but if I'm going to use hotels I go for the hard panniers.

Andres has already said they come off very easily and you're not left with a load of scaffolding which is good but you'll need a small saw to remove the useless bracket that is sited in the top right hand side of the top box because it catches the inner bag if you use the KTM ones and fill it completely :D
 
The Trekker are made by Givi. I will have a set of Trekker panniers and frames going cheap shortly. Been used for one trip to the IOM last summer for the Festival of Motorcycling.

When next at the dealer, ask for a 1050 brochure and look at page 19. its a rear end shot ( Same as 1190) of both pannier set ups,..... should give you a good idea.

I missed that bit................. You have to be fecking joking don't you???? Not even close on the R, you need a step ladder to get to them :D

Getting standard Adventure.

Think I have settled on the Metal cases, but with the quick release SW Evo Rails so it does not have a huge scaffold sticking out several feet when the panniers are on the garage shelf (the other 350 days a year)

Going to have a peek at the Trekkers at the dealers again, the size I can handle, won't be any wider than the S10 is with similar sized Trax on it, and I would rather have the extra capacity for holidays.
 
Do you want a measurement across the width of the KTM panniers on the standard adventure before you make a final decision? Mine are sitting next to the bike before being loaded on and I head off for 3 weeks tomorrow evening.

The KTM/Touratech metal cases look really wide to me, and a bit odd fitted to the 1190S. The R possibly carries them a bit better due to the increased height.

Readily available panniers for either 1190, hard or soft, are very hard to find IME. If you care about aesthetics, it gets even harder.

Good guess, first a Harley then a 1200 gsa now the KTM. Most people think it's offensive including the DVLA as they've removed all the cnt's from their web site ���� (it's my initials honestly)

Out of interest why do you still have the original KTM pannier fitting kit in place - looks better with them removed and saves a little bit of weight ;)

Facetiousness aside I do occasionally use the panniers ;) for trips with Amanda but find a roll bag and tank bag are more than enough for when I'm on my own.

It's just that............well............I hate panniers and top boxes! Have I ever mentioned that before? :D
