No not the usual engine/gearbox/bevel oil question.

This is 'What lubricant should I put on the head exhaust port threads before putting the finned rings back?

Just giving the ST a service and I always check the finned rings fitting at this point. I have used copper slip in the past:thumb2, and it does work, but I'm sure that I read on here something else was recommended.

(Yes I did a search, but could not find anything).:nenau

Coppaslip, liberal dose, re applied every year - no worries.

Funnily enough, about 3 years ago I used Optimoly (per the above post) for a short period, and didnt have a good experience - I ended up having a right old set to on on of my nuts resulting in a proper hammer and chisel attack to restore normality.......just my experience

My rule of thumb: if it gets hot or is very exposed copperslip. If not, I use ACF50 grease. Its simple that way.

Are you 100% sure you used Optimol TA and not Optimol T? The latter is the recommended gearbox input splines grease, and probably not designed to stand the high temp at the exhaust port.

As a mnemonic I think of "TA" = contains an A for Auspuff (german for exhaust), and "T" = Transmission.

That said, I use coppaslip on my exhaust threads every year, and have neither had any problems.

Optimol the thick gunky grey stuff. dunno if that's T or TA?

copperslip practically vaporises at that sort of temperature. it's better than nothing, but not a patch on the Optimol IME :)

Anybody tried using dry graphite lubricant? It might sublimate if your exhaust temperature exceeds 3,900 degrees Kelvin. I believe 0 Kelvin is absolute zero or -270º C (ish, I used to be certain of these little details decades ago. :) )

Easy to work with and very slippery. You can get from the net, it's the proper lubricant for locks, a very fine grey powder.

Personally I use 'Rocol Anti Scuffing Paste', I was given a tin in 1975 and I've used about half of it, but at £165 a tin I don't suppose many people would want to buy any!

All the Rocol stuff I've ever used has been very good. For this application Rocol 797 should do the trick - and it's only £143.20 for a 500g pot! :D

Thanks for all the replies.

Looks like I will continue to use copper slip then. Its always worked, and the rings are easily removed every year.:D
