I've just put 500 miles on my bike on a trip to Wales. When it came to filling up my mate on his GS800 put half the amount of fuel in as I did. That's the first time the MPG on my 990 has really hurt- so much so I may have to jump ship and think of another bike! Not good as I love the beasty so. someone talk me out of it?

Until Oct last year I had an '06 990 Adv & my mate has a 800GS - I wouldn't say he used 1/2 the fuel, more like 60 - 65% of what I used. "Ready to Race" not "ready to tour economically" I'm afraid. Now got a 950 SE and it's much better mpg wise - just need to get a bigger tank than the 14l that's currently on it!

cheers

Markie

I had an 800gs until Sept 2009, back then £17-£18 to fill the tank, over 200miles to a tank. 990, currently £22-£23 to fill the tank, a real stretch to break the 200 mile mark but not impossible even when laden.
The grin factor with the 990 is worth the extra cost IMHO.

200 miles??

How are you getting 200 miles to a tank? I've run out at least twice at about 160!
You're right about the grin factor though.

Dont know how it happens but on a tour round the Highlands last September I hit 200 miles on the odo, ( pannier, rollbag and I am a fat git) must have been momentum. Mines a 2007 with standard pipes.

Be interesting to see how the later models compare for MPG

I only got 154 miles out of my 950 last week and had to be rescued :blast by the side of the road after only getting about 15 miles out of the reserve!!

I get 140-150 to the light.

I think I worked that out once to be about 37mpg?

I certainly don't do more than about 10 miles after the light comes on, I'm all for keeping a bit fit but pushing one of those bastards down the road goes above and beyond!

Run to the lakes last night, fully laden panniers and large holdall, 160 miles to the warning light. I am sure that previously when I did 200miles the warning light came on at 170.. Last night I wasn't hanging around, gave it plenty of welly.

I care. :aidan

Had a run up to North Wales the other weekend on the Katoom and got 175 miles to the light. Did another 25 miles on reserve. When I refuelled there was still another couple of litres left in the tank.

Still not as good as a standard 1200GS but not to far away. :thumb2

The 950 does have a bit more fuel capacity than the 990 as the fuel pump is located underneath the battery and not between the tanks

Some of my problem may have been my fuel filter! My coughed and spluttered all the way up to Wales the other week. Searched the web and and problem would appear to be mucky filters.
Changed them myself and bike fires up a lot quicker and is running more smoothly. Off to Europe Thursday. I'll see how the tank/mpg fares then!
love Katy

I really don’t understand. You must have a ‘duff’ one. My 990 Adv is reliable, economical, easy to ride and cheap to run.

My 1198r breaks twice as often and does half the miles on the same volume of fuel.
My 998r is uncomfortable and costs a fortune in tyre wear

:rob Maybe you’re all comparing it with the wrong bike

I've had a fairly steady 40mpg from new and I ride the bike aggressively enough. 42-44 when touring.
