what oil is best

I would suggest whatever the manual states, or any good car oil as you are dealing with a dry clutch......any 10/40 mineral or otherwise will be fine.....change gear at 5000 revs and forget it.
Al.

The last statement there is good for me. :thumb

Two questions that may provoke this sort of retort amongst forum users are Oil and Tyres, I would suggest whatever the manual states, or any good car oil as you are dealing with a dry clutch. To be honest, any 10/40 mineral or otherwise will be fine. Folks talk a lot about mineral V Synth and there are advantages to both. Choose either, change gear at 5000 revs and forget it.

Al.

10-40W is fine if you like the rattly engine noises!

use 10-50W :thumb Comma oils do a good one.

Oilys

A few years ago BMW stated in the BMW Club journal that when running in if you were a hard rider you could switch to synth or partial synth after 12000,
if you were easier on the throttle 18,000. So that was and I assume still is the official advice.
Dave GS (thats Mazola synth!)

I really wish people would stop recommending this effing oil. It is only SE spec which is no good for the GS.

You are right.
Sorry I didn't notice that it is only API SE class. :(:(:(
I never knew SE oils are sold anymore.

I certainly wouldn't put it in my bikes:eek:

Rock Oil Semi Synthetic 20/50 when it's truely run in, mineral before:)

Just a query......why would you change gear at 5k when the bike still pulls like buggery up to 7k, which is still below the safe rev limit?

Dazlove

Good Question,

Because it feels about right under normal riding conditions; i.e. just getting about and staying close to the speed limits. I'll use the remainder of the rev-range for spirited overtakes but I'm of the opinion that anywhere over 5K is a waste of fuel. I reckon there's little to be gained except a few mph, and consequently only a few minutes p/h of travelling time, for a noteable use of fuel and subsequent redunction of tank range and greater expense.

There's no point in thrashing these engines except for fun but, at a high cost for little return. As far as I can tell it's nothing like the power of a 1000cc sports bike where the performance returns are found near the redline with of course, the fuel costs.

HTH. :thumb2

Adventure box - got to get past 5000 to keep up on the motorways!

What would happen if a mate turned up and was using the same oil as me, would i have to change to another brand or just never speak to him again.........

And i have RTFM, no reccomendations in there for this one :thumb2

confused

Engine oil grade: brand-name HD oil for
four-stroke spark-ignition engines, API
classes SE, SF, SG; combination with CC
or CD specification

Don't know which owners manual that is fella. I have the manual in my hand now for the 1100. printed 6/96 and it clearly states the minimum spec is SF.
This is the same manual I got with my first GS back in 1997. Bit grubby after 15yrs.. but hey ho.

A photo.. because I'm nice like that.

If yours is the very first manual printed for bikes that came out in 1993/4 then thats fine.. but as you can see, by 1996 THAT advice had changed.
