Hi,
I hope somebody can help. I have been using my 2610 for a year now no problem. I should have left well alone, but typical bloke, instead I upgraded from City Nav V9 to Europe 2008.
Out on the bike today, and the instructions were utterly hopeless. Instead of "at the next roundabout take the second exit", I was getting "in 0.5miles turn west". Additionally the GPS seemed to have only a vague notion where I was and was showing my position as in the yellow patch next to the road, rather than on the road. I checked that it is set for "Car/motorcycle" and not "offroad". Any suggestions as to what else I have done wrong? Or were the world's satellites having an off-day?
Help would be appreciated.

Don't say that as I've just sat down to upgrade to Europe 2008 this very minute:eek::eek: should I procedd:(

i had something similar happen on mine, not with the latest maps tho. Turns out i had somehow downloaded the maps to the unit on the lowest detail setting. only found out about 1 hour into a 400 mile ride :blast

Try downloading in high detail, worked for me, i've got 2008 on my 2610 and it works perfectly :thumb

To be honest it sounds as though you do not have the detail maps loaded at all, rather that you are running on the European basemap. Having associated the maps with Mapsource using the unlock code, you then need to transfer them to the unit.
Can you establish on the unit itself which maps are loaded?

That is a very good answer. I would not of thought of it (too dimple), but highly likely. Also make sure you check the box include navigation details as when I upgraded the option was off.

Never knew that you could select the detail to download

Autoroute "yes / no" on non NT, but the detail level

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I will check the maps on the unit when I get home tonight. Also reassuring to hear others have the same set-up working fine. Cheers

Hi,
I don't really doubt that it is human error. I just can't pinpoint the error! I re-installed all the maps last night, but today the performance was the same. I am reinstalling again now, but I still cannot find what I did wrong.

Also check the maps are switched on in the unit. Menu - Info - Map info. This will also list what maps are installed.

  • Did you unlock the maps to your 2610?
  • Are you using the non-NT version of the update?
  • Is yours a US 2610 - if it is, did you also load WorldMap?
  • Check which maps are selected on the 2610. It is possible that you unlocked and loaded them correctly, but them deselected them within the 2610

Hi All,
Thanks for the inputs. I went into the menu to check the mapping info and there isn't any! I do not get offered the map info menu, just GPS Info and System Info. I checked the Garmin website and they have the following in their FAQs;
It seems I have a problem which requires technical support.

Question: My StreetPilot 26xx does not show any map detail

Answer:
If your mapping information is not showing up or you cannot find points of interest, you may have inadvertently turned off mapping information or somehow deleted it.

To troubleshoot mapping issues:

Click the Menu button on the right side of the unit.
From the Main menu, touch the Info tab.
Touch the Map Info button. If no Map Info button displays, the mapping information may have been lost. If this happens, call Garmin International for further troubleshooting help.

Hi All,
Well I sorted this. I did a factory reset on the device, and reinstalled a smaller set of maps. I had been running a 4 Gig card albeit with only 2 Gb of maps. The new maps appeared to download to the card OK, but at 2.3Gb this somehow crashed the setup, and left me running on the European basemap, as was theorised above. Garmin claim that one of the earlier s/w updates removed the 2 Gb limit, but that does not seem to be true. (And yes I have checked that the s/w and firmware is all at the latest issue). I got things running by installing maps for the UK and NW Europe only. When I have more time I will try and see how many maps I can get in before this problem occurs. Thanks to everyone for their inputs, and other postings on the site that helped me get to the bottom of this. This is a superb community and resource.:beerjug:
