What the heck is this?

OK, so I've just moved from an 1150 to a 1200GSA. Being a nosy bu**er that likes to know how things work, I removed the left-hand tank panel and...

... found this lurking underneath.

It has three wires - two going to the battery (+/-) and one spliced into the back of the accessory socket (? ingition signal). It was just lying inside the L/H side of the tank, over the pump...

There are no markings (other than the embossed 'TOP') and I haven't (yet) taken it apart.

Is it a GPS tracking device? If so, any idea who makes it?

I'd ask the previous owner, but he's not around any more.

Thoughts?

Not seen anything like that around my GSA. Whatever it is it works with switched power and is self contained as there's no wiring to anywhere else. Could it be some sort of movement alarm with self contained battery so it charges up whilst ignition on and auto sets when ignition off? Having said that there appears to be no means of creating any sound so maybe thats a daft idea anyway

So what do you do?

But I suspect it's made in Australia and I have, in fact, just fixed it.

FWIW, I reckon you're probably very close on the GPS tracker guess......I just google imaged that and it's the right size etc.

Yep - I reckon it's a Tracking device. Only last week I spent an hour or so searching some rural barns / trading estates for a nicked motor whose signal was last sent from where we ended up.

Eventually found the tracking device in the hedge and the vehicle nowhere to be seen ....

If you phone Tracker on 0845 602 2356 and give them the reg. number they'll tell you if they fitted a Tracker to the vehicle, then you can re-arm it by paying them a hundred quid-ish.

Well this is a valid point. There are 'set' locations where a lot of these companies stick their devices which seems to make a mockery of the whole thing. And the problem with a bike, is that it's going to be pretty difficult to hide something the size of a pack of cards without thieves knowing what it is or where to look for it.

I've seen whole dashboards chucked in the hedge before where the thieves have done their homework and found the tracking device. And if they're going to break the motor for parts they won't give a feck what damage they do getting to it.

Quite often motors are nicked and then parked up in a carprk or the like for a week or so just to see if they get found and recovered. If not, it's a safe bet that there's no device on it ...

Will give them a call. And as for hiding the device - three screws and 1 minute of my time isn't much of a deterrent. Screwdriver coming up methinks.

It won't necessarily be a Tracker (as in the company) device - the one in the hedge last week was a Tom Tom device that sync's with a phone / lap top ...

The mystery deepens

Undid 7 screws and lookee here...

It's got an IMEI number so it can phone home. Or at least accept a command over the mobile network.

As you can see, there are several numbers on it. A quick search on Google didn't bring up any immediate hits, so will have to do some more detective work.

There is a SIM shaped item on the circuit board with a "If found..." number. Looks like that's a generic Orange netwok number.

OK, peeps - any more ideas?

Green circuit board inside lid looks like a GPS receiver. Tracker guess is most likely correct. You could phone the 0800 number and ask the person who answers for more info?

I found that link and took a look through, but am none the wiser. The "if found..." number is Orange customer services.
