What the hell do I do now !!

My bike has sold successfully my wife is happy for me to spend upto £8K on a GS and I have a big cash deposit burning the proverbial hole. You lucky barsteward I hear you cry yet I dont know what to do for the best. I have not been in this position before, I have never spent this much on a bike.

Her opinion is that it must last me for 5yrs so I should buy the latest/lowest mileage GSA I can afford and get everything on it so Im not left wishing. Whereas Im wondering whether I should just spend upto £7k and buy a really nice GS, thus my loan repayments are less (BMW finance 3.65 flat rate 7.9 APR). But maybe if I buy older it will cost me more in the long run because of maintenance and depreciation.

One BMW dealer has offered a 2004 1150 GSA in Black with 6000 miles, Aluminium panniers, ABS, H/grips @ £8k or a Mandarin Yellow W plate 1150GS with 16000 miles ABS/grips and luggage in lovely condition for £6k. Another dealer has offered a 2004 GSA in Silver with 3000 miles full Aluminium luggage, ABS, Grips, baglux tank cover @ £8k

I know poor old me but I just felt like writing this and if any of you want to make comment good or bad I would be interested to read them.

There's a lot of luxurous tasty cigars in Spain btw. I recommend Robustos cigar, the Cuban one. I got them in Andorra when i was around-the-Europe trip, there was cigar shop that had big room full of shelves from 2.5 metres high - the biggest cicar collection i ever saw in my life. Robustos = excellent stuff (altough i don't smoke, but averagely suck 1 cigar per year on a very special event)...

So get the and go get the tasty cigar from the South!

Go for as new as your budget allows.......

Have a test ride.........there is a difference between a GSA and 1150GS

See if you like the power brakes on the 2004 GSA's....

Buy the bike which is the tidiest and best cared for, with the accesories you desire.....

A 3000 miler could be in worse nick than a 6000 miler.......it's all about how the owner looked after it.

Condition is everything.............good pointer to how the bike has been treated.

Go for the Black Adventure or at a pinch the inferior 'primer' finished one.

If you buy the 1150 you will only do what lots of people do and end up trying to tun it into an Adv by sticking on a bigger tank etc.

If in your heart you want an Adventure, you always will. It will be like an itch!

Don't believe it. Current price for a fully loaded 1200 is £9700. Me thinks that they haven't been maintaining their website too well!

At Motorrad Central the approach appears to be little negotiation in bike price, but they are prepared to deal on accessories.

Follow the test drive advice. I had two rides on a GSA, one for an hour and the other for three.

Two thirds of the way through the second I was wondering why bikers were enthusiastic about this machine. I decided to make for home and give it some 'welly'. Jeez, it changed character immediately, it was funnnn.... to ride.

I'd been too conservative and holding back. Give it its head and it'll bring a smile. It's a classic bike, an all round mount.

Test driving an 1150GS

It is very true that you can run an 1150GS for a long time and not realise the 'punch' that is available there if you want it. Soon after I had mine I read a test report that remarked on this - I soon found that I was very very rarely anywhere near fully opening the throttle; However now I have a 1200GS and while the roads are wet and slippery I daren't try too hard !!!! You will like the 1150GS .....but be under no illusions - you will soon hanker for the 1200 ! Best wishes, Brian

Well I've read all this and having owned an 1150 and done a fair few miles on a GSA all I can say is





Get an 1100


Unless you are into the pose value of having the latest model the 1100 is far far better than the newer tackle. Once you have test ridden the newer bikes go and ride an 11.
When you have done this think what the money you have saved can do to get the bike just how you want it.

The biggest mistake I made last year was not listening to the people who told me to buy the 1100, just because I thought newest must be best.
How wrong I was.
