What to do? What to do?

Back on topic..

I agree with skid on the above, reject the bike the dealer has to get BMW uk involved at this stage, being 2 yrs hold will not be on your side and could warrant a larger contribution from yourself if they offer you a replacement, but don't give in.

Andy Cook is the top man at BMW uk (warranty wise) he overseas all issues .

Best of Luck.

Why the dealer is dragging his feet is because BMW will pay him 7 or 8 hours labour at warranty rates to change the motor .............. a job which takes 1 1/2 mechanics close on 2 days , so they will be out of pocket ..... apparently costs about £7500 to do the job including the motor

I find that a bit hard to believe - myself and my mate Baz did a KTM 990 in a day and we'd never done one before, and for that you need to take both tanks and stuff off

may be wrong though

i think its time for you to sit dowm and put pen to paper and fomaly reject the bike..people have had replacement bikes with less problems than yours

He can't reject the bike as BMW didn't supply it and private sales have a much lower duty of care. The only course of action is via the warranty. I too have switched back to a TC. The motor isn't as good BUT with a hilltop remap it ain that much worse and frankly after a week or so you don't miss it (well OK...maybe a bit).

I was at my local dealer last week and the service guy was moaning about they didn't have enough secure storage for bikes due to the level of warranty work and they were sitting outside. I know this because there was an RT WC owner their going apoplectic due to his bike having gone rusty over the last two weeks when the bike was in to have a new motor due to bubbling paint....

bmw have agreed that a repair isn't feasible on my bike, but replacement engine cases aren't readily available available the mo! waiting until next week to see what's going to be done!

The OP has owned his bike from new

It can be difficult to reject a vehicle back to the dealer without the dealer's full co-operation/support and it gets progressively more difficult after the initial 6 month period of ownership. However, if the vehicle is on finance and that finance company is not linked to the manufacturer (for example it is not BMW Finance) then you have another avenue to go down as you don't actually own the vehicle the finance company does and they tend to not fuck about in these sort of situations :comfort

Well…. after 4 weeks of going back and forth, BMW have agreed to replace the whole engine instead of a repair or just new cases. So in a couple of weeks time il be running in a new engine (again).

I was watching them part of the time while my bike was in for its first service , the bike has to be stripped down to the front paralever and wheel and rebuilt from there.... hell of a lot bigger job than changing a KTM motor

Just out of curiosity, a new engine would that also result in the clocks being put back to Zero?

A reply from BMW with regards to the length of time it will take before an offer to rectify the problem is received;

Dear Mr ..............

Thanks for your email to Andy which I have looked into.

First thing is the Centre will need to diagnose your bike and then based on their findings they will progress the claim down the warranty system. This is usually very timely to get a reply.

Best thing to do is to book your bike into your local centre. Please let me know if you would like help with this?

Kind regards,

Hi, found out today that mine also requires a new engine due to blistered paint, they should be able to complete the work in approx 2 weeks.

However has anyone been through a similar situation, is it possible to reject the bike (18 months old) with just over 5000 miles on a PCP deal?

Sales of goods act etc etc.

How's yours progressing?

Well, bike dropped off today for new engine. Had a blast out on the R1200R to start the day for a couple of hours and by the time I got back to the dealers my bikes engine was out and the new one being built up.

Ive bene given a 15' plate GS loan bike that has the gearshift pro fitted - f**k me! love it! Ive used quick shifters before and really really like them, but was a bit dubious about one on a GS. Just wondering if my 13' bike with new engine will accept one??

Pound to a pinch of sh*t the dealer acting on BMW's instructions will do their level best to weasel out of paying out on a warranty claim that means fitting a new motor due to corrosion . they will try to blame it on rider abuse etc ,however, stick to your guns and don't back down mention phrases like 'not fit for purpose ' and 'not up to merchantable quality ' and speak to the citizens advice .

Then once it is eventually sorted demand that they give you a free years extra warranty and whilst it is still in force sell it !!!!

Hi Neil,

The dealership resolving my issue have been very supportive and done their best to sort it out, all credit to them them and in fairness to BMW for not quibbling and fixing the issue. Whether the issue should occur in the first place however is a whole other thread ;)
