As a sad but happy old git with a newish 1200 GS, who loves pootling around the Lakes and Dales once or twice a week in Summer and Winter, and who has no intention of travelling to N Africa, with the only extra on the bike being heated grips, an absolute boon, looking to produce the longest unbroken sentence on the website, and with possibly an extra £500 to spend on goodies, and bearing in mind the broad range of interests on this site, what would you recommend I could buy which would be of biggest benefit to me and the bike ( all sensible suggestions will be most appreciated) ! ?

Regards to all, and a Happy belated New Year.

Lights upgraded / spots fitted, best mod IMHO, speak to Les Wassell, the lighting GOD :bow :bow

My modifications

This is what I've done (in order of suitable-ness for your good self):

Road tyres (I recommend BT-020 if you're never going to take it off road - massive improvement) (about £200)

Heated waistcoat (I recommend the Keis X4, £90, superb, but make sure you try it on (sizing is a bit off) - optional lead to connect direct to accesory socket £10

Top box (if not got already) - makes things so much more practical :rob

Front mudguard extender £15 ish

HID lights - £200 ish from Les Wassall of this parish - make you stand out a lot more. Shiny!

Well thats my ten pence anyway....if you've already got the topbox that should set you back about £500. So easy to spend some elses money!

If you intend to ride all year round the Keis heated jacket with 5 way heat controller is defo one of the best buy's. I ride every day and would not be without it. Also I have Les's low beam hid and have just bought the conversion for the spots.
But the best advice is the training. IAM Skills for life package. Join your local group and meet some new friends and gain extra skill through training. Just my thoughts:):)

You will be able to pick up most things from the FSW section on this very site:

£500?

HID lights if you are going in the dark. If not. Don't bother or only do the dip beam, perhaps.

Muffs. Excellent, never get cold hands again.

The larger side stand foot. Will save your bike from falling over in mud / on boiling tarmac.

A simple heated waist coat. Keep the inner core warm, the rest will be OK.

A dozen ear plugs. I SAID A DOZEN EAR PLUGS!

020 (or similar) tyres.

A £12 annual subscription to UKGSer.

OR A BUCKET LOAD OF TRAINING.... PROBABLY THE BEST IDEA..... and the £12 subscription.

Neil 23 bike, looking bright :D

A set of crash bars - you'll drop it eventually (we all do) and you'll be glad of them when you do. £125 or so should cover it.

Spend the change on training, touring or whatever.:nenau

Helly Hanson base layer (warm) keep you toastie all year riding!:thumb:thumb

The bike sounds spec.ed up as necessary.

Do the Dragon Rally.:camping

Spend the rest on beer n pies!:D:beer:
