Whats that thing to the left of the power socket at my feet on the 1150 GSA?

Is it possible to get a new cover for it?

a random bike off the net...

Its a live 12 volt contact that bolts to the live side of the starter motor solenoid.

It allows the bike to be jump started without having to dismantle anything (or to jump start someone else of course :thumb).

The negative equivalent is on the rear of the left hand cylinder.

Only found (originally) on the Adventure models.

The covers should be a BMW part - but I've never had to renew mine.

Interesting - thanks for the good answer...

So do I need some sort of special cable to plug into it?

The negative equivalent - what would that be used for?

No - its not a socket . . its a metal lump that the crocodile clips on the jump leads grip onto.

You would connect the red ( + ) one to the connection on the starter motor cover and the black ( - ) one to the negative 'lump' on the cylinder head. The other end of the leads would be on someone else's car or bike battery.

The negative one is useful as most parts on the GS' are painted and therefore insulated (and those that aren't are usually bolted to something that is :blast).

Saves a bad connection from burning whatever the negative lead is clamped to.

Saves removing the tank to get at the battery, or from taking off the starter motor cover in order to get at the main battery lead.

Those super-efficient Germans think of everything :thumb

I'm in Aussieland and have a 2003 1150GSA and it never had one............but it does have one now.:) I got the all the bits from my local BM dealer....think it all costs about $25 or $30 I like the idea of having a power supply at the ready. I've already used it a few times.........I had a run of punctures lately and it's great to have a power supply right there to connect up my air compressor, (with inline fuse of course). Very handy too for jump starting, either your bike or someone elses.
