just having got the 800,ive started to strip it down to clean it ,dont mind getting it dirty ,but its got to be shrowroom condition before i start.
anyway i digress again ,while its in bits ,i want to replace all the wheel bearings .
i know from all my old other bikes ,that replacement bearings ,dont have to be bmw brand ,but as im new to the section (been on most of the others ,not even been blackballed from any of them yet),dont know much about the 800s .
so should i go with BMW or can some one reccomend a cheaper ,better bearing (and supplier ) .
plenty more questions coming in the next few days ....

I would make a point of not getting BMW ones and getting a good aftermarket one from any aftermarket distributor.

We can pick up skf sealed bearings for about £5 a set so I will get some if you want some

I will get a load so that I will never need them, have spare clutch and throttle cables so haven't needed them so far, mmmmm what else can I buy?

Front and rear bearings are 20x47x14 according to the parts fiche... the other rear bearing for the sprocket is marked 6204-2RS (according to the parts fiche): is it a different size? When I google '6204-2RS' the size I find is 20x47x14, the same as the other bearings.

All the bearings is the same size, the two of three(rear whell) is no name(cheap) and one of this is brand name fag 6204 2rs probably bmw install this bearing due more loads from chain-rear sprocket, yesterday i replace and three bearings with skf 6204 2rs and felt my rear well turn smoother!!!! my bike have only 7000miles and old bearings start wearing

There are more, but I think these are the two most interesting once.

The main issue are the rear wheel ones, where replacing the middle one is not best done outside a workshop.

Also have a look here: http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=637591

There is also a thread on advrider which goes into detail why the rear bearings fail, but I can't find it right now.

Here be dragons and bearings and the causes ye seek:

Go a little deeper into that thread and Woody the wheel man gives the details on failures and makes a pretty good case for his findings.
Casper, you already had it, the first one you posted or is there another thread on ADV where Woody describes this?

Do you mean this one?:

Yes that is the one.

No I've not had problems with my bearings (yet), other issues with F8GS yes (which on the way home Spain on a truck).

But the information from Woody is quite interesting, as it seams that the tupe (don't know a better word for it) which is inside the wheel is 0.001" too long which is enough to put side wards pressure on the bearings when the wheel is assembled, and therefor cause the issue. Also that the hub which holds the middle bearing can be slightly too narrow can cause the issue. Both of these two issues seams to be really easy to fix, and BMW should be able to do it during a standard service - but BMW being BMW we all know their attitude.

Also if the findings by Woody and other people in the US are correct then it also explains why some people never see the issue, and some people have to replace the bearings every few thousand miles - quality control....

No hijack, but what's the deal with your bike in truck?????

The 658 has rear wheel bearing issues, too. I've seen a bike come home in a truck from Cancun and when we pulled the rear wheel, the bearings literally fell into pieces and the balls bouncing loose on the ground, complete catastrophic failure of all 3. That same bike had steering bearing issues, and the entire motor replaced due to bearing failures in the motor. It was as if every single bearing in the bike, save for the front wheel bearings, was of poor quality.
That 658 had a March 2009 build date for what it is worth. BMW replaced the motor after an energetic fight with Motorrad Mexico and the dealer, but the owner picked up the tab for the rear wheel bearings and the steering bearings.
The F800 and the 658 are a great platform, but suffer from very poor quality control IMHO.

Pump or the electronic control that you can bypass with some splicing of the wires?
I've heard of the sending unit going but never a pump itself failing. Hope BMW picks up the tab.

Good question, it would run for 10 seconds then die, I found a thread on advrider with the same issue, and until he got a new fuelpump it would not run. Oh yes, BMW will pick up the tab as it's still under warranty - also I got to other travel insurances.
