I think the gold looks shite

You should look at a bike (car, boat, piece of art.. ) and not have your eye drawn to one stand out thing (or at least if you do, it should be subtle - a small buch of red poppies in your flower bed but that's it - no more red, a yellow spring on the rear shock... etc.) It should be a holistic work and your eye should float over the whole thing.
The gold wheels just look OTT and shout look at me ....

Yes, but those colours suite those bikes, as they are the colours those bikes are known for. A GS with gold cast wheels just looks ridiculous.
