Wheel Removal

I have just splurged on some Tourance EXP's and need to get my wheels out.

I assume these are a doddle, but without loosening rear wheel I cannot tell if the exhaust needs to be removed first?

Also can anyone tell me the torque settins for the bits I will need to undo for a tyre change - spindles, caliper bolts etc.

And anything else to be aware of???

I am also looking to get a manual, I see what looks like official BMW DVD's on E-Bay, are these better than the good old haynes for a bit of DIY TLC, I don't plan doing much more than wheel removals and oil changes.

Wheel removal is a cinch and you don't need to remove the exhaust.

From memory, the torque settings are:

Rear wheel bolts: 65nm
Brake calipers: 30nm
Front wheel spindle pinch bolt: 22nm
Front wheel spindle: Can't remember but I use the german torque setting gutentight:thumb

You'll need a front wheel spindle tool which is 22mm. I use a 22mm bolt with a couple of nuts welded to it but I thing you can get one from Jaws motorcycles of this very parish:thumb

wheel knowledge removal

rasher all you need is in your manual that should be with your new bike that came from a main dealer it also has all your servicing stamps !!! lets hope you have it. Peace of cake removing both wheels, just be careful on removing front calipers as its tight on the rim when removing,rap a cloth over calipers when pulling away from caliper mounts,back wheels just like changing a car wheel (or tractor)!!!!:D:D:D :comfort

Tyres arrived today, general consensus from the interweb seems to be the Exps' will be a step up from Battlewings, so despite them having 2mm at each end I will try and get new rubber fitted over the weekend.

Also just losing the squared of profiles should help, I assume these are the tyres the bike has been on since new (6k) and it looks to have mainly done straight line work.

Got original manual ,was not expecting it to cover wheel removal, started reading it, but soon lost interest, very German.

You don`t have to read a manual from to cover to cover,that`s why there`s a index.

Glad new rubber has arrived, went out this afternoon for steady B-Road run and managed to get the rear end to let go on the rather crap battlewings.

I ain't the fastest rider on the planet and it was good smooth surface, not had a tyre less capable than me since a Michelin M90X on a ZZR1100 back in 1996 which I could also get to lose traction at my gay lean angles.

Not doing anything silly either, turned in, rolled on throttle and whoosh they slid a couple of inches mid corner with no warning - horrible.

What? You are letting yourself down.

You cruised at 125 mph, only giving up the much fettled (or should that be blinged) Z1400 as you were frightened of losing your licence.

Or was it because you were, as you put it, riding roads where despite 20 years of sports bike riding you could not get out of first gear, that you bought the 1200 that was, how did you put it? Ah yes, 'Only just fast enough'

Did you perchance hit a wrong type of leaf perhaps or one of those pesky manhole covers they insist on placing on the racing line:nenau

A fine buy if you are happy with 2mm of tread left.... and who wouldn't be?

Thanks for that Wapping old chap but I've had a think and after logging onto www.shitmybikekeepsslidinginacorner.com and found there are 4 other instances of Battlewings sliding nearly2", I've decided I'm going to park my bike up due to the obvious failings in this premium brand.

I'm shocked and dissapointed that a manufacturer like Bridgestone could sell a product with such obvious fatal flaws. When I had my 48mph FS1-E, I had the same problem with the Avon something or other which would put my bike in an alarming weave at around 37mph. I complained to them then and believe me, they learned a lesson and made Yamaha stop selling that little moped with it's dangerous tyres.

Right, I've penned a strong e-mail to the warranty dept at Bridgestone and I fully expect they will take on board everything I've mentioned about the dangerous condition of an almost 2" back wheel step out on a damp autumnal day.

I may even start a poll which will really make them think long and hard:mad:

Both are almost bang on 2mm, rear a bit squared, front has got a bit of shape back since being introduced to some corners, I think the furthest it had previously leant was when on the sidestand.

May have hit errant leaf, who knows, still trying to get used to the "feel" (or lack of after last bike) so would prefer to swap over to new rubber to get nice profiles and be on something I have a bit more confidence in.
 
I think you'll find the GS will move about a bit due to the tyre pattern on the dual purpose tyre. You do get used to it though and it's never as much as you think:thumb

Brake calipers 30nM
Front spindle pinch bolt 19nM
Front wheel spindle 50nM

I use the BMW Cd-Rom and BMW toolkit.
