anyone know? is it a 1250 boxer? there was this rumour a year ago they were developing a 1200 parallel twin, like a larger F series or a Yam TeDiuM...

No recent news ,they are flogging all the GS's they can build at the momment ,so as usual, any replacement will be an evolution rather than a revolution.1200 parallel twin ? where did you hear that:nenau

MCN today, 20bhp increase, detuned hp2 motor or something like that. DOHC and new major styling changes in 2010...

In answer to the question "when is the new GS out?" I'd have to say " probably about a year before it should be" ;)

2010 it is rumored but not confirmed.....

Not a major change it seems bar the engine...

And yes, MCN - who knows when or what it will be like then :D

Lets hope BMW have taken note of all the moans and have built it to a high standard, trouble is I don't think they will.

What on earth does a bike with off road / rough road pretensions want with an extra 20hp. MCN are always the same - every new bike has to have more hp and look more posey. IMO a new GS could do with the less weight but could also do with being physically smaller and with more torque / chuggability in the engine. And more reliability too.

You are spot on in several ways.

The GS is not an off-road bike any more than a car like a suzuki X-trail is an off road 4X4. It is, however, pretentious and appeals to wannabe Charlie and Ewans even if they never get further than the Kings Road. I do, however, take my hat off to those that, in spite of the shortcomings, take GS(A)'s to all corners of the Earth. It has to be said though that there is little real competition.

So that leaves everyone that buys the GS(A) to use as a road bike. The 1200 was a welcome upgrade from the 1150 as the lower wieght, better handling and greater power does make it a more exciting bike to ride.

Whether we like it or not no manufacturer is going to shift units by coming up with a marketing approach that announces 'The new GS1250! Slower, heavier - more ponderous than ever before!' as the vast majority of Joe Public are programmed to always want more and need the barest excuse to trade in for the latest thing. New equals better regardless of pretty much anything.

In my view the way forward would be a different line up of the GS range as follows:

A 1250GS - give it the 120hp engine and re-engineer the final drive along with anything else that makes the current range unreliable. Make it even more road orientated, a universal motorcycle for all seasons

A 1250GSA - tune it for a storming mid range, 100 bhp would be plenty

A 1000GSA-MS (Military Spec' GSA) - overengineered bulletproof bike . No can bus, no ABS, nothing superfluous, maybe around 80 bhp, long stroke, huge bottom end and mid-range. Big comfy seat, soft but well controlled suspension. Something that could take you anywhere and ensure you arrive everytime. Hmmmm sounds quite like the old 1100 in fact...

make it 80% the size it is.......:thumb
make it 70% the weight it is....:thumb
simplify every system on it.......:thumb
ditch the canbus, the abs.........

bloody hell! its an airhead!:blast

silly me:D

I like the idea of different versions...

I disagree on the size argument as at 6'5 I find the GS appropriate. Smaller bikes like a Tiger or a 1000 Vstrom are simply too small for me. Saying that, I would not disagree with 20kg off. In power terms, I too think 100bhp is plenty enough. I wouldn't mind beefier torque still and a gear less...

Looks like MCN collected their info from here:

Having had a 1150RT twin spark , the 1200RT was a major leap ( I still think that aesthetically the 1150 RT looked better ). But a further increase in bhp ? I would go for the 1300GT , if i want more power and speed( top speed on the RT is 137 at around 7500 revs , impossible to sustain and takes a good down hill to achieve). It will be interesting to see if they go back to a organic design.
