When the trail goes cold.

I will mention the recently rediscovered Grandcamp Maisy site with over two and a half miles of original German bunkers and trenches. Well worth a visit:thumb

The big titted English woman who took our 5.5 Euros, told us that 10 years ago an American who's fought here in 1944 came looking for the place and couldn't find it. His son came to visit that morning.

"There's always one" she said......Ange, not the big titted woman:thumb

Deciding to man up after all and dispensing with the aid to my tender buttocks it's time to indulge in that age old French pastime of coffee, fag and watch the totty go by.

One evening in Arromanche I'm treated to some bits of beach for tea.
IMGP0246-XL.jpg

Apprehensive at first I remember Skygod telling me, "Don't worry it's just like having a mouthful of jizz"....well it's alright for him to say that:D

And so a new day dawns at Château Olgra.

Many miles of trails and back roads brought us here for coffee

A stop at the beautiful Canadian cemetary

Then we'll head inland for some proper trails:thumb

Did you stay at that nice little municipal site under the castle walls?

Yes, when Timpo and I called there last time it was still shut.
The guy who runs it has a real nice AT btw:)

We set up camp and the evening sun shone as I pointed out the rats running along the river bank....something I later regretted.

The castle at Falaise is a right hotch potch, but is forgiven due to it's incredible history.
IMGP0252-XL.jpg

Bill the Bastard was born here
P1030238-XL.jpg

Lovely old town with some stories to tell.

That night I was called upon to make several 'rat checks'...knew I should have kept quiet:blast

C'mon missus, we've some trails to ride today.
IMGP0265-XL.jpg

Some great trails too.
IMGP0262-XL.jpg

IMGP0257-XL.jpg

IMGP0258-XL.jpg

A few trees were down this time.
IMGP0270-XL.jpg

I filled the hole made where the tree had stood with rocks and tried to get the bikes around.
IMGP0271-XL.jpg

It was too hot and difficult to manage it alone so went for plan B....plan C was to cut the tree with my saw but will leave that for someone else
IMGP0272-XL.jpg

Notice the helping hand:rolleyes:

A real good mix of lanes in this part of France.

Time for some home made cake near Le Bo.
P1040377-XL.jpg

IMGP0268-XL.jpg

Then back to it.

Those long legs come in handy for other things too....

We're approaching a tricky section.
IMGP0275-XL.jpg

Much steeper and slick from the heavy rain I get off before 'doing an Ange':hide
IMGP0276-XL.jpg

It's left and down there:eek

When we were here last both Timpo and I agreed the girls wouldn't like this bit so I bring Ange's bike down.
IMGP0284-XL.jpg

Back on board after a ....'slight mishap...' and wishing I hadn't left my helmet and gloves at the bottom.

Shortly, Ange was to have her spill...which has left me having a rethink.
She got away with two strained knees and a load of bruises. Phew!

SHOW US THE "VERN'S"

Back at Honfleur the next day and the bruises are starting to show.
P1030245-XL.jpg

The injuries did have one benefit however, normally I can't keep up with her walking pace....I could then:bounce1

I think that's a smile.

Just west of Honfleur

Back at Château Olgra with a bottle of piss disguised as cider, I'm re reading The Grapes of Wrath and reminded of the difference between man and woman......

Women can change better’n a man.... Man, he lives in jerks -- baby born an’ a man dies, an’ that’s a jerk -- gets a farm and looses his farm, an’ that’s a jerk. Woman, its all one flow, like a stream, little eddies, little waterfalls, but the river, it goes right on. Woman looks at it like that. We ain’t gonna die out. People is goin’ on -- changin’ a little, maybe, but goin’ right on.

IMGP0294-XL.jpg

Ange caught me deep in thought and gently asked what was wrong.

I looked up and said, "Nothing's wrong, I've just worked out the van's doing 44 to the gallon.":thumb

Ummmmmm ... wonder who wears the trousers in that relationship ... :D :D

I think it's rapidly becoming obvious actually...
Once I'd sorted her out I was faced with the problem of getting her bike out.

Thirty minutes of sweating later I manage to get the bike into a position where I could just about ride it out.

Once upon a time, our Timmy would have sat down, got out his pouch of rolling baccy and said

"Well you got in in there...YOU get it out "

:augie

He's lost it :blast

Looks a genuinely great trip, and for all the banter and laugh you can have with a trip away with the blokes, (and as blokes, sometimes we need that..) I think you're very lucky to be able to go away with your wife and share a great bike trip with her too.

Tell 'er good on 'er from me !!!

:beerjug:

How well you know me! Fuck!!!
:D

Enjoyed that muchly (after realising that the initial bit wasn't as bad as it looked). Relieve to see that the spill wasn't too bad and here's hoping that the bruises and sprains disappear soon.

Like you, at first I was a bit stumped by the treatment of Falaise castle but I came to prefer what's been done in preference to trying to restore it. What period in the last 900-odd years would you pick? :nenau

I don't think that we'd have made such a good job of mixing the modern with the medieval the way that the French have.

Thanks for posting. :thumb2

Yes, I'm fortunate but do have good banter with her too........not sure she appreciates it the same way though:D

Somewhere along the line there's a price to pay with a woman, there always is.

Although she's arranged for us to jump off one ferry and onto the IOW one to visit my son on our way home, she also decided I should visit Osborne House...even paid for it.

I go along with it of course, even visit the shop full of Lemon Curd, which she buys, and other stuff.
IMGP0315-XL.jpg

By the time I'd read about good ol' Queen Vic, seen countless photos of the grumpy, fat and ugly bint, was reminded she's granny to Kaiser Bill, hated her role as Monarch and hid from public view, then traipsed around the god awful house and down to Swiss Cottage amongst hoards of noisy French kids.....
IMGP0325-XL.jpg

....by then I feel she'd got her own back, making me read the guide book only rubbed salt into the wound:mad:

glad to see you"re wifes relatively ok.i have to ask.....is there no end to your galivanting around the worlds great riding places? not that i"m jealous....much
