When to stop?

Where in Italy are you going to? That really makes a difference between Bolzano or Catania for example.

I started trying a bit more direct in the last few years, but essentially I motorway all the way towards Troyes, then I have a D roads route that is fast flowing, generally stop south of Lyon/start of route napoleon and follow that the second day into Italy.
Skip through Genova (sometimes I stop there staying over at friends’) and then you can cut through Tuscany and Val d’Orcia where you can keep a relatively quick pace through amazing road.
I jump on and off the motorway at some points to save time here and there. This usually also towards end of day when you get a bit bored/tired/impatient to reach destination.

There is a million option but this keeps it between around 6/700km a day that is generally doable and enjoyable.

I once rode from Italy back to Dartmoor and Devon in one hit thinking it would leave me a few days free before going back to work. On reflection it wasnt a good idea as I ended up getting transfixed to truck rear lights and a few time left it quite late to pull out for an overtake. It wasnt fun and I spent the next few days exhausted sleeping instead. I wouldnt do it again for sure as I think its dangerous for yourself and other road users

Did Essex to Burgos, Spain ,in one shift.
My plan was to stop at motel when tired but I never got tired enough to stop.
Was a pleasant night ride with no traffic and stops only for fuel, coffee etc.
I'm away end of September and plan to get at least to Bordeaux before stopping but we'll see.

I did Annecy to York once in a 22 hours stint on a 1100GS in the 1990’s
About 1000-1100 miles perhaps
Never again
Took me 3 days afterwards to feel human again

Did, over 540 miles in one day from north London to north Wales and back via Tenby whilst avoiding motorways. Never again.

Regularly did Lincs. UK, to centre of Portugal in one hit, both bikes and cars, used to stop when tired and kip in the motor or when on the bike, head on the kerb, apart from a head full of earwigs once, it was fun.
1350 miles, usually done with small sleeps in 24 - 26 hours, some of the hallucinations were brilliant. (y)

Oh yeah, hit a herd of wild boar one year in a car, wrote the bike off one year, other stuff that you forget....My guardian angel has been very attentive.

All fun, even the bad bits.

I'm planning to ride to Italy next Friday…. This will be about 1000 miles or so, I don't really want to plan an exact stop, but I will stop if I get tired of course.

How have you done this in your recent trips if you had to do a long distance?

How long is a piece of string? Put simply, you is you, not us. Do it, or not, in one hit or with as many (or as few) stops as you like. There are no medals handed out at the end, no matter what.

Everyone wants a medal, certificate or pat on the back these days. And that’s just for making a bed :DD

Update, I left at 17;00 from Newhaven to Dieppe, then went set off on the Trek. Got a massive headache and nowhere to get paracetamol in the middle of the night, I was already planning my stop in the north of Italy, but as magic it disappeared.

Fully dead but 1100 miles in 22 hours

Well done Sir, stay safe.

Robbi duly delivered the third item on the list.

If we’re doing a long day on motorways we will stop every 100 miles - it’s important to have a strict 10 minutes only rule though.
That way sore bum does not set in.

Also we find camel backs (or similar) are great for staving off tiredness just a small sip on a regular basis.

Longest we’ve done in a day is 750 miles but, I think to do a 1000 mile day would be an achievement and a great memory. Bearing in mind my wife rode that 750 miles on a naked 600 Bandit with camping gear I think you can do it.
🏍👍

I did Fareham to Santander in one hit.

Worst part was the queue for the ferry at Portsmouth…..That, and the bar prices.

Bed was comfy though and a decent breakfast.

:)

Certainly deserves a pat on the back, endurance riding is definitely a thing to admire and 1100 miles in 22 hours is good going.

my wife rode that 750 miles on a naked 600

I read that as your wife did it naked….

Now, THAT would justify some considerable and justifiable outpourings of congratulations…. But would need to be confirmed by pictures, especially of the fly and insect splattered bits.

That would bring a new definition to the term 'Squid'
