When we are abroad anywhere and we hear some whiney loud english accent, we automatically stop speaking. What is it about the english accent which cuts through all others? No offence intended ... but it does!!

Funny that as I find the same with gutteral, incomprehensible Scottish. No offence intended ......

To be fair though, I avoid any Brits like the plague too when abroad. And often at home too ! And before anyone chimes in, I'm sure most Brits and all Tosseurs are very glad i do that !
