Hi all,

What's the consensus on where to get tyres supplied / fitted. I have a 2023 1250 GSA and picked up a puncture last weekend. Bike and tyre has done 4k so worn but not worn out but only 3mm left so I don't think it's worth paying £35 plus to get it repaired. The 2 BMW dealers I've spoken to won't even do a puncture repair.

Anyway, do you go to the main dealer and take the hit and pay more for the service / convenience or buy online and use a local fitter? I do worry about my precious gold rims getting scratched.

I'm in East Sussex so any local recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

I remove the wheel and take to local tyre shop, is my response to what others do, can’t help with the East Sussex aspect though.

Ryder motorcycles. Bit of a trot for you but they do care about your bike (and wheels)

The only tyre manufacturer who 'approves' puncture repairs is Michelin (|IIRC). So most Bike shops won't repair a puncture on anything but those, especially on a large Bike like the GS. That's what the majority of my local Bike shops say when i've asked previously.

I generally buy my tyres from FWR and get them fitted locally for £10 on a loose wheel. Although, the same place will price match tyres too.

Get a tyre plug kit and plug the tyre yourself to fix your puncture
Run off the 3mm
When it’s fecked - remove the wheel and take it to a motorcycle tyre supply/fitter and save yourself from enduring bring stiffed by a BMW Motorrad dealer

Can’t help with East Sussex, sorry.

For the Solent area I previously used “Russ’s Motorcycle Tyres” in Portsmouth but since Russ Tappenden has retired I wouldn’t go there again as I dislike the guy running the place now.

Dimons of Gosport can plug motorcycle tyres and fit new.

Lee’s Trade Tyres in Southampton just did me a great deal on my Tmax tyres, ride in ride out, I can recommend them highly for both bikes, cars and vans.

I once hit a flint rock on an almost new rear tyre that slashed it open. All I could do was limp to my local Motorrad agent nearby, who then anally raped me for a replacement.

I use a local independent. Cheaper than a dealer but dearer than mail order. I like a ride in ride out service which can add £15 per wheel.
No idea about Sussex but others will read this thread. I can recommend:
Chris Mullins in Gloucester
North Shropshire Tyres, Oswestry
I will try Jack's Tyres in Welshpool as my brother uses them, but it will be a while before I wear out the Dunlop Meridians on my new bike.

In the absence of a local independent, I have used Protyre, although not all branches do bike tyres. There is a branch close to Chris Mullins in Gloucester which helps keep prices competitive and handy if Chris does not have stock.
Protyre is part of Sumitomo, one of the big Japanese tyre firms.

I tend to buy them from whoever has what I want and I have them fitted on my wheels.

You could try SBS Motorcycles in Lancing.

Podge does all the servicing on my GS including supply & fitting of tyres. Top geezer.
He’s on an industrial estate but there’s a nice cafe by Broadwater lake about a 10 minute walk.

If you are worried about potential damage to the paint on your rims during tyre change use your local bmw dealer. Yes it will cost a bit more but if they damage your wheel then it will be replaced. Happened to me a few years ago when tyre fitting machine took black finish off outer rim, was supplied with new wheel..

other tyre fitters will replace wheels if they damage them

I had a puncture on my R1150GS and went to National Tyres in Brecon. They had a good reputation but the regular bike chap was off so the manager decided to have a go. He fucked it up. NT bought me a new wheel. I traded the bike with the damaged wheel and sold the unused one for top dollar.

I put a tip tip plug in but not sure how long it will last
Good man
Keep your eye on it and see how you go
Sticky string dog turds may also be a solution or mushroom plugs
I carry all types of plugs and then you have options

I have used a BMW dealer when I was desperate because of an impending trip. I normally take the wheels off, buy my tyres of choice wherever they are cheapest online, then get them fitted at a local independent for £10 a wheel. I prefer this as it's an opportunity to service the brake calipers and have a good inspection, as well as grease the front wheel spindle.

My local bike shop has been very competitive for tyres. Jim Allan MC's in Falkirk. CTA3 fitted to (my GS "LC") loose wheel, supply and fit for £170 which I thought was pretty good!

I get mine from Oponeo who deliver direct to a local tyre shop who fit them (lose wheel) for £15.
As the Woodster says its also an opportunity to check calipers and pads.
