Can't find any real opposition to the 1200 GS, so as long as the finances come together that'll be my next bike.

It will be second hand hand so...

Not wanting to cause any arguments, but there have been quite a few posts about the early 1200GS's having a few 'issues', but the later ones were more sorted.

So, what year/model did it become sorted? Seem to remember 05/06 being praised.

If I was in your shoes I'd be thinking about getting an approved used bike from a dealer just to be on the safe side. Chances are you would never need the warranty but better safe than sorry :augie

Yip........despite some eejits selling the things.........methinks there are loads of dealers out there who are good folk and will do their best to provide a decent service for their customers........!If the budget allows I would definately go for a later one without the servo breaks......(coz ah'm paranoid LOL).....although thousands have probably never had a problem!

You'll luv it!

I`ve got a sept `04 12GS that I bought new and has 14k miles on. The engine cover is corroded, I`ve had new front brakes under warranty & it has a very very slight oily mist coming from the final drive plastic seal that I`m not even concerned about.
I`ve had no problems what soever with the servo brakes so if I were you don`t discount the older bikes as 1000`s of bikes will have no probs with them :thumb2

Good luck in your search :D

I got a '04 12GS 42k on the clock, with the servo brakes. No worries so far (Doh! thats cursed it!).

Have ridden an '07 for a day and much prefered the newer ABS!:bounce1. The gearbox was much slicker to!

Go for as later one as you can!:guitarist

My 04 was a heap of shit, only ever let me down once though, but there was endless warrantee work done on it over the 18,000 miles/1 year i owned it, my second GS a 55 model was much better with only a couple of issues in the 12'000 miles / 10 months i owned that, my 06 gsa has had a couple of corrosion issues (front cover and disc bolts) but other than that has been brilliant 25'000 miles / 22 months for me the gsa has been the better buy as i've needed to spend very little on it to make it perfect for me (just panniers) whereas the 'budget' gs's have needed little bits of expensive bling added just to suit me.

So in short, i'd go and buy something from a dealer with a warrantee and as much bling as you can haggle, 06 would be the earliest for me and i'd save hard for a 56 model:thumb2

I've got an 06 GSA, 13thou, front cover corrosion only fault up to now, battery seems a little sluggish when starting but never failed to start, no problems with servo brakes, best bmer / bike I've owned in 30 yrs of riding.

Hope all that's not the kiss of death!!

The people who have had problems always shout the loudest - The vast majority who have had no major problems... apart from the odd warranty claim... well some of them will pipe up on here.. while the other 99.5% will sit back and feel smug. Or are too busy riding the thing to waste time on a forum.:augie

If you're going for a nearly new one - an approved one is definitely the way to go.:thumb2

A bit older... the for sale section is well worth lookimg at...

thanks for the replies.

I do agree those with problems shout loudest, but there did seem to be a consensus that the later models were more reliable. Does seem logical, new model, teething problems etc.

Are there any ways of identifiying the models. Year of registration aint the best as it could be old stock recently registered (although, do GS's really sit around in showrooms for a long time?)

The GSA looks lovely, but I do not intend going off road or round the world, so for my budget I will get a later model GS than I GSA.

See my accountant on Thursday and will make a final decision on budget then, but SWMBO has indicated 8 grand max. But on the plus side, being money from my limited company, thats cash, no financed and no part ex, should be able to get at least a 2004 model with around 50,000 on the clock:rolleyes:

But, if I was a patient man, I could wait for a 800GS. But why wait, I can always trade it in next year when they are more plentifyl:o

Gazuk you are clearly joking. £8k and you should get at least a 2004 model with 50k on the clock. Clarks in Dundee are doing 07 models pre registered for £9k. You could probably get one for £8K.

If it's any help. I recently purchased an '06 GS with full luggage, inner bags, alarm, abs, white lenses and tank bag (I think that's everything!) for £7.5k. It had just over 9k on the clock and was from a non-BMW dealer. It's a great bike although I would agree the front cover seems prone to corrosion. Having always had sports/sports tourers before I'm adjusting to the riding position/style but so far it's been great fun learning. It really is a bike you just want to keep riding.

yup I was joking, but I might have a word with Clarks. Would be worth the short flight if I can get one fo them for 8 grand.

From the 2007 model the ABS was changed from servo assisted to non servo.
Also, I'd go for as new as possible but you don't necessarily have to buy from a dealer as it'll still be under warranty if you get an 07. Basic Spec 07's were being sold for less than £9k at the end of last year so this will have had a definite knock on effect with residuals.
Get ABS & heated grips for definite. On board computer and luggage if you can. You should be able to get a 10% discount on luggage at the dealer if you buy the bike from them. :thumb2
