which camcorder?

Hi all,
off to Germany/Austria/Italy at the end of August, and now thinking of taking along a camcorder,if funds allow.....anyone have any recommendations or suggestions as to what particularly to look for? Looking at some that have decent optical zoom,as opposed to digital, and obviously needs to be smallish...though I think they all are now anyway

How about a Sony with a Carl Zeiss lens and the 40 gig harddrive...hours of footage and no tapes or dvds to mess with ....or at Empire electro they have JVC with 30 or 40 gig and a 32 x optical zoom, around £350
