650 Dakar or 650 X-Challenge and, does one bike have a taller seat than the other?

Better for what?

One's a bit more dirt orientated and one's a road bike that can cope pretty well off road.

The X Challenge is taller but not 'dirt bike' tall.

I have been pondering the same question,as am looking to sell on my Gs at some stage..

too perhaps do a very long trip

but never got around to posting it,

Will wait and see what comes of this thread...

Having had both...

XChallenge is a good bike, but has some faults - some of which can be rectified and others are more inherent

Dakar - good bikes, but weight is more and the forks are poor offroad, replace with Yam WR KYB forks

2014 onwards KTM 690 is better, but is pricy and still needs mods

We can have a chat at Dent

Agree with JB.

Dakar is tamer and more comfortable, but is heavier and not as competent off road.

Xch is the other way round, and more suited to dirt oriented work. Can go to town on upgrades and bling.

Both good mpg and reliability. I've had both and enjoyed both in various roles, but have kept with the xchallenge(s!) Over recent years.

If I were looking at the Dakar, I'd also be looking at the sertao. Mate has one, and he's done several trail camping trips with me.

JB has summed it up pretty well. You really need to nail down what you want to use the bike for and at what budget. I've stuck with my Dakar when I probably should have bought (and then modified) a 690. :D

Currently like this but picking up my nav tower parts tomorrow....

650 Dakar or 650 X-Challenge

For what use?

I've ridden neither of them, but I've ridden WITH both in Morocco.

For hooning around in comfort or commuting on British roads, I'd go for the Dakar (which may last longer from what I've seen/read)
For hooning around a bit more aggressively but probably more cramped up and for greenlaning, or for anything more serious, I'd go with an x-challenge.
