Which engine oil ? 1150

Ive tried the search but it gives millions of hits. I need to get oil this morning and cant find any reference to it in the owners book So please will you tell me which type. Thanks.

Luke the 1150 can use a wide range of variants

I use 20W50 in them If you use 10W40 semi they get rattly

Not so bad with 15w40 Semi but 20W50 keeps them quieter

Also If the oil level is between the upper third and the top of the window just leave it

They tend to use oil quicker up there if it's between the bottom of the window and half way then half a litre should bring it to the "Safe" zone

P.S. I am not saying that it WILL............. BUT Zero W fully synth oils can leak past the seals on older worn engines plus it's damned expensive

These 'classic' oils aren't usually suitable

Sometimes rather than usually I would contend.

As always, read the label & cross reference with your manual. Morris make many classic oils. Some are single grade such as SAE 50 which would not be suitable. However, their multigrade classic oils are fine for the 1150GS as they meet the API SF spec given in my manual. Even the one sold for use in canal boats, 10W/40 API SF, would be fine if you don't ride in very hot climates.

I used Fuchs 15-40 Semi and never had any problems, used to find 20-50 made it sluggish on (very) cold mornings. I think the SG API rating and the ambient temp is more important

Is it SG or SF? Velocettes are SF surely the R1100 deosn't use the same oil as Velocettes?!?!?!?

and to follow up, there are a number of options available by mail order if you want a 20W/50 - all of the multigradeones on this Opie Oils page seem to meet the SF spec or better.

For some reason this Silkolene Silkolube Classic 20w/50 doesn't appear on the classic page but is great value at £15.19 for 5 litres
