Which engine oil?

Ok ok bone question I know just with the manual makeing no reference to sythentic oil only mineral and it stating not to put additives in and with some people on here with slipping and dragging clutches I thought it was valid!

Not your fault Stu, it's one of those questions thats been done to death...a few times!
I use semi-synthetic 10W40 in my 800 with no problems

For what it's worth I phoned Castrol on this subject and the guy on the phone was a 1200GS owner. His view and advice was that the 650/800 motor is best run on mineral oils for the first 5k miles as the engine beds in better that way, then it is fine (and in many respects better) to use semi or full synthetic oils. He added that using semi/full synthetic after 2k miles would be ok but just not ideal. I then phoned a BMW dealer and asked the same question and their view was the same as Castrol BUT "if your bike is still in warranty you are better sticking with the mineral oil since if you have an engine fault you may well run into problems with BMW if not using the oil specified in the manual".

All the best.

the canbus fluid check is far more important, make sure you check it at 22.7 degrees,on the sidestand, and in a prevailing wind:thumb2

Very relevent what bike he owns as his bike's clutch doesn't use the engine oil like the 650 twin / 800GS does.

If you read the whole post you will see that he was familiar with the 650/800 engine :blast. The fact that he owns a BMW was simply to emphasise that he was a BMW enthusiast and owner. Sorry if that was not clear or confusing :thumb2. It certainly does no harm to get first hand advice from the people who make the oils that we use.
